"Who's No. 1?" - 10 techniques to take charge (time management, goal setting, record tracking)

By: T Man At initial look, it would seem that Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and positive thinking have absolutely nothing to do with one another. On the contrary many of us that have Attention Deficit Disorder develop negative thinking patterns due to the fact that we get frustrated by our challenges and many times feelings of being completely overwhelmed. This extremely negativeway of seeing things then makes it even more difficult for a person to manage those challenges placed in front of us and move forward.

Using positive thinking lets people with ADD to focus on strengths and accomplishments, which increases motivation and happiness. This, in turn, allows a person to allow more time to achieve progress, and considerably less time being down and stuck. The following tips shown below provide very good suggestions that you can use to help youchange into more positive thinking patterns:

1. Take Good Care of Yourself

It's a great deal easier to be positive when a person is eating well, exercising, and getting enough rest.

2. Tell Yourself About the Things For Which You are Grateful

Challenges and strains don't seem nearly as bad when you arealways reminding yourself of those things which are right in life. Taking just one minute every day to stop and have a good appreciation of the good things will make avery big difference.

3. Don't Make Assumptions, Look for the Proof

A fear of not being liked or accepted sometimes leads us to assume that we know what others may bethinking, but our worries are usually not based in fact. If you have some fear that a family member or friend's dark mood is because of something you did, or that your co-workers are gossiping behind your back secretly, speak up and ask them. Don't waste any time worrying that you did something wrong unless you have real proof that there is in fact something to worry about.

4. Keep Yourself from Using Absolutes

Have you ever told someone "You're ALWAYS late!" or complained to a loved one or friend "You NEVER call me!"? Thinking and speaking in absolutes like 'always' and 'never' makes the situation seem worse than it is, and puts programming in your brain that makes you believe that certain people cannot deliver.

5. Don't Have Negative Thoughts

Thoughts you have can't achieve power over you if you don't permit them. At those times when you notice yourself putting forth a negative thought, detach yourself from it, witness it, and absolutely don't follow it.

6. Step on the "ANTS"

In his book "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life," Dr. Daniel Amen speaks about Automatic Negative Thoughts - "ANTS". These are the bad thoughts that are in most cases reactionary, like "Those people are laughing, they are likely talking about me," or "You say the boss wants to see me? What did I do wrong?" When you notice thoughts such as this, realize that they are only ANTs and destroy them!

7. Practice Squeezin', Touchin' and Lovin' (Your Family and Friends)

You are not required to be an expert to have an appreciation of the benefits of a warm hug. Having positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, gives one an instant pick-me-up. A research study on this subject involved a waitress touching some of her customers' arms as she gave them their checks. The tips she got from these customers were higher than from any of those customers that she didn't touch!

8. Increase Your Level of Social Activity

By raising your level of social activity, you reduce the level of loneliness. Surround yourself with people who are happy and healthy, and the positive energy they radiate will affect you in a positive way!

9. Be a Volunteer for an Organization, or Help Another Person

Everyone feels good after helping. You can volunteer your money, your time, or your resources. The more positive energy you launch into the world, the more you will receive in return.

10. Counteract Rumination With Pattern Interrupts

If you are ruminating, a proven way of stopping it is to interrupt that thought pattern and make yourself do something that is completely different. What rumination amounts to is extreme focus on something negative. Rumination is never productive, because it's not rational or solution-oriented, it's only extreme worry. To deal with it try changing your physical environment - sit outside or take a walk. You could also call a friend, turn on some music, or pick up a book.

When considering the corporate world, protocol is pretty much observed and followed like a religion. Understanding the things that must be done represents the basic fundamentals of productivity, but having a steady mind and interaction makes up the whole thing to enable true productivity. There are some who seem to work well even when under pressure, but they're not common ones and we are only human and thus imperfect. If we permit these little things like stress under our skins, it will not solve our problems. Sometimes it requires some courage to be brutally honest with oneself and face the fact that we're becoming workaholics than admit to ourselves that we aren't performing at our best.
