A Guide To Acne Myths: Myths Finally Put To The Test

By: Chris Channing Acne is a common problem in today's population of teens. As many have gone through some type of acne situation, it is likely everyone has heard at least one type of acne myth. But what myths stem from actual truth- and what myths are complete fabrications?

Acne Myths Put To The Test

It is common for teens to modify their diets according to what doctors say about acne. It is true that getting certain vitamins or minerals can help in fighting acne- but as one myth goes, eating pizza supposedly causes acne altogether. But as studies show, there is no proof of this if pizza is eaten in moderate amounts, so teens can qualm their worries of pizza.

Other types of foods, such as fried foods and even chocolate, have long been associated with acne. Again, these foods have not been proven to cause acne in studies. But what has been proposed, is the fact that greasy foods often leave grease on one's hands- which then may touch one's face. This can help clog pores, which may lead to a breakout.

More interestingly, few studies have been shown to link dirty skin to acne. There have been some connections made to foliated skin and acne, however, so one should still keep a good exfoliation regime in their daily routine. Of the many studies, some of them conflict with another to the point where it is hard to know what side to take. Results have, however, been seen through daily skin washing regimes.

Myths On Improving Acne

There are three main myths in circulation today in regards to obtaining a healthier looking face. It is commonly said that prescription drugs, ivory soap, and tanning can help in fighting acne- but whether or not these hold true remains to be seen.

Tanning or getting exposure to the sun is one popular myth for curing acne. But on the contrary, it can help increase the time it takes to help scars or red marks to heal. There are some slight benefits to getting a good tan- but doing so in excess will cause problems not only with acne, but with frightening prospects such as skin cancer.

Ivory soap or other harsh soaps are commonly seen as ways to dry out the skin to help fight acne. In many respects, they do help dry out the skin- but this doesn't necessarily help acne. In fact, many of these soaps can irritate the skin and cause further breakouts to occur.

Last but not least, we have the prescription drug myth. As the saying goes, prescription drugs can cure anyone of acne. This is completely untrue, of course, as not every drug works for everyone. Some harsh forms of acne fighting drugs do indeed work- but can easily cause life-threatening problems. In that case, it is often better to find alternatives to the acne problem.

Final Thoughts on Acne Control

The acne problem many face isn't long term. In many cases, the problem goes away within a few years. If you happen to be one of the individuals who go through this tough period in life, try to keep a good routine going to help keep your skin clear. Be sure to stay away from the aforementioned myths- doing so can mean all the difference in your results in perfect complexion.
