A tour of clubs in Murcia (Edition 1).

By: RussellMarsh A brief guide to bars in Murcia City.

Going for a drink in Murcia takes a bit of getting used to if you're British. If you like you can do the 'Brit' thing (Go out at 6.00p.m. and be back home by 12.00 ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most places in Murcia don't show their true character until around 1.30a.m. so you'll miss out on most of the amosphere if that's the way you choose to go.

Here's a tip: To do justice to your night out in Murcia adjust your body timer to a Spanish night out by simply changing your watch by a couple of hours. Don't even think of going to a "real" Murcia bar before 11pm. Earlier on, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the beautiful floodlit Cathedral. from the terrace. Then you could amble down to the Hotel Rincon de pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a liqueur in the "La Muralla" cocktail bar, one of the last remaining places in Murcia where the old Arab walls can still be seen.

Here's a selection of some of the best bars in Murcia.

El Albergue (19 Calle Vara de Rey.) This place is open until 3, serves cocktails and has live music on a Tuesday. Youngersters love it and it is very busy at weekends.

Zanzibar (3 Calle Andres Baquero.) Here we have a busy small bar where you can get just about every kind of drink you could ask for. Inside you'll find punters relaxing with anything from a milkshake to a cocktail. Happy hour is on Wednesdays from 9-11pm where b.o.g.o.f. applies.

Guanábana Jam (6 Plaza Cerámica.) A new club with bars &stage primarilly offering Blues, Soul and live Jazz. Tuesdays and Wednesdays it's open till 1.00, whilst on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays carry on later till 3 or so..

Mestizo (14 Doctor Fleming.) Cool friendly café during the day but in the evenings it becomes a lively bar. riotous atmosphere later as opposed to chilled out earlier in the evening..

El Bolo (29 Calle Vara del Rey.) This is a chilled out bar in the Old Town right in the middle of the party zone. There are live gigs on Tuesdays and also cocktail features on Fridays and Saturdays. A decent place to start your evening, then go back for a drink later to wind down perhaps. Bar Warhol (25 Calle Victorio.) Heaven for those of you into Pop Art with copies of the Velvet Underground mentor's
pictures on the walls. A sophisticated place that's ideal for a quiet chat and drink. One of the cooler bars in Murcia.

La Bulla (Calle Montijo.) One of a few Cuban bars specialisiing in Cocktails. Open till 3.30.

Itaca (7 Calle Mariano Vergara. Tel. 968 934 922) Near the Uni. Quite an unusual bar in that it's both bar and a bookshop. Frequented by local students having coffee during the day, the mood then changes in the evening as a more mature crowd come in to sample the cocktails. Mojitos is the most requested drink.

Drexco (26 Trapería.) Cool café near Murcia's Cathedral serving coffee and non-alcoholic drinks. Probably the biggest variety of coffee in Murcia with beans from all over the world. Open 'til 1.00am with chilled out music and atmosphere.

Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel.) An old fashioned tapas bar not far from the cathedral in the heart of the City. Order a sherry here and look like a local.

Icaro (Plaza Beato A Hibermón.) Situated near Murcia University, in an area which is a lively student scene during term time. Again Icaro is a good place for an early evening drink.

B12 (17 Calle Trinidade.) A nice place but doesn't liven up until later. Nice place to grab an early drink to start the evening.

That just about covers it for the first article on bars in Murcia City. There's a few to go at anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia pubs that you think deserve a mention then get in touch and let me have details. Cheers!!
