All About Nutritional Supplements: What You Need To Know

By: James Brown They say that change is the only constant thing in this world, ironically that is true. The world has evolved from the rock ages to medieval times to the high technologies that we enjoy now. And as we grow forward, we all know too much that our needs and wants go with the times. We have our shelter homes have expanded from caves to houses to chic condominiums; clothing fashion has altered a million dozen times for the past years; and of course, let us not forget food.

Food is basically the most essential of all needs. Man needs food to survive above all. But then again, with all the strain, anxiety and stress that come with everyday life, the bible may very well be accurate as it says "Man cannot live on bread alone." The nutrients that we get from the food we eat are not as adequate as they used to be. This is true especially that a good number of us get our daily rations at the nearest fast food joint or convenient store. With the number of single parents who work around the clock to provide for their kids, it is common that pizza parlors are getting a good amount of orders per night for dinner. And pizza does not boast of the nutrients that these kids need to grow, glow and go.

With this in mind, scientists made their studies and not for long, nutritional supplements were born. Nutritional supplements, by the name itself, were purposely made to give us that extra boost of nutrients to foster our dietary needs. These supplements generally come in a tablet or capsule form or a drink in powder or liquid form. They may contain one or many of the following: a vitamin or mineral, an amino acid, a concentrate, an herb or other botanical essences, a metabolite, an extract or a dietary substance that may aim to increase or decrease one's dietary intake.

These products are called supplements as it is their objective to augment or add on to our usual food intake. It is important that these supplements are not confused to be an alternative for food as most people would think. It is unfortunate that some people think that because they are taking in supplements, they need not eat at all. This is a very serious falsehood. It is recommended that one consult with a health adviser or a nutritionist first before going for supplements. This is highly urged as the consultation will be able to aid you better in choosing what nutritional supplement best complements your dietary needs.

It is equally important to make sure that the nutritional supplements you are taking are safe and effective. Nutritional supplements are not so strictly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as these are regarded as food substances and not as drugs. This means that the supplements do not go through a rigid test to prove that they are safe and effective to take so there is a need to be extra careful when taking one. Ask around and do thorough research before deciding to take in a dietary supplement. Meticulously check the pros and cons of a product. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
