Alternative Treatments For Acid Reflux

By: Frank Robson While some leading medications work for everyone, they actually make the Acid Reflux worse after you stop taking them. In particular, when a patient takes the medications classed as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), they inhibit the production of acid.

If you stop taking these medications, the body responds by bouncing back and producing even more acid. This process is known as rebound hypersecretion. For this reason, it's not a good idea to suddenly stop taking PPI's if you are currently using them.

A number of herbs are known to help with heartburn. Tea made from coriander, anise, fennel, caraway seeds, chamomile and angelica can help after eating. Other teas that are known to help are peppermint and spearmint. Many health food stores also carry capsules made from peppermint and caraway seed oils which many people have found to help.

There are specialists who rely on roots and herbs. Ginger root is one herb that's used in Ayurveda, and taking it regularly can help reduce acid reflux.

Adequate fiber consumption reduces symptoms of acid reflux. Fiber easily digests the acid from the foods. Fiber also keeps you unconstipated. Fiber pills or water-soluble powders are available for those who do not enjoy raw foods.

Stop smoking. Nicotine causes a relaxation of the esophageal sphincter, allowing fluids to swish around freely. Sometimes smoking and stress are related, and both need to be reduced, as both affect your digestion.

You need to stay away from citrus fruits, potatoes, ground beef, Buffalo wings, chicken nuggets, raw onions, ice cream, cheese, spaghetti, liquor or wine, coffee, tea, and certain salad dressings. There is a life beyond all these eatables.

Some of the other alternative treatments that have proven popular include meadowsweet, licorice, and some digestive enzymes such as papain. Even marshmallow, mixed with chamomile, can work as an anti-inflammatory and has helped some people with their acid reflux.

When it's all said and done, positive lifestyle changes, a good diet, controlling your weight and minimizing your stress are all important to controlling acid reflux.
