American Rottweilers Make Great Guard Dogs

By: Sharon Davies The American Rottweiler is a very intelligent and good-humored dog. Hundreds of years ago they were known as working dogs and are happiest when performing a task. The American Rottweiler is very possessive of its owner and his possessions and, therefore, will make a good guard dog.

The only difference between the American Rottweiler and the German Rottweiler is the size of the dog. The German Rottweiler is shorter, stockier and more muscular then the American Rottweiler. The American Rottweiler is thinner in the face and body and taller than the German Rottweiler. They are both black with tan markings on their cheeks, chest, muzzle and eyes and both have medium double undercoats that have straight and coarse hair.

The females are smaller than the males weighing between sixty to one hundred pounds, while the males weigh between eighty-five and one hundred thirty-five pounds. These dogs do not realize the strength in their size and are sometimes referred to as a gentle bears.

If the American Rottweiler is not properly trained in obedience at an early age he may become a bully, which can lead to additional behavior problems. American Rottweilers are not difficult to train and should be trained. They can be stubborn dogs and therefore they need to know who the boss is. Their size alone can be very intimidating and results in making a good guard dog. They excel in sports such as carting, flyball, herding and agility.

If obedience training does not occur at an early age the American Rottweiler can become a bully and will have other undesirable behavioral problems. These dogs excel in sports such as herding, carting, flyball and agility. The American Rottweiler is a relatively healthy dog breed. He tends towards hip dysplasia, as do other large dog breeds and he in the last few decades has a tendency toward cancer. If any moles or lumps should suddenly appear on his body it is imperative that you take him to the vet and have it checked out thoroughly.

Finding a reputable American Rottweiler breeder should not be difficult. Many are on the Internet, many veterinarians will be able to steer you to a good breeder and the American Kennel Club will always be able to give you information on a reputable American Rottweiler breeder. The breeder will answer all of your questions and most likely will ask you the questions to make sure that you are ready for a Rottweiler.

There are breeders who sell American Rottweilers and breeders who sell German Rottweilers. Doing your own research before you go Rottweiler shopping is a very good idea in order to find the dog you desire. If you do not research the breed before you shop there is about a ninety percent chance that you will be unhappy with your dog.

American Rottweilers make good pets and because of their size will make excellent guard dogs. Just be sure that obedience training is given in the first ten months of their life and your Rottweiler will become your giant bear
