Cause And Effect: Acid Reflux Info

This, unfortunately, does not solve anything. Medication will only do so much, and there are basic steps you can take to lessen the need for it.

One of those steps is to understand why acid reflux occurs. In order to do that, you need to learn how your body digests food and why complications can sometimes occur. Thus, you need more acid reflux information than just knowing when to take a pill.

When you swallow food, it makes its way down your throat, eventually sliding to the bottom where it meets the lower esophageal sphincter muscles. This ring serves as a barrier between your stomach and your throat and keeps the stomach acid from coming up.

Food will press against the ring and it will open, allowing the contents to pass through. It is then supposed to close up, tight against the acid. Food then continues toward the stomach where it is digested. This is the scenario of a healthy body.

It changes, however, when there are problems. For instance, if the lower esophageal sphincter becomes too relaxed, it will not close when food passes through. Instead, it will remain open. This allows the acid that builds up in your stomach a way into your throat. Your body will try to remove the excess acid and that is the easiest option. The acid will pass through the relaxed muscles and you will experience what is called acid reflux.

What many people fail to realize is that the lower esophageal sphincter does not simply relax for no reason. There is a cause to it, multiple ones actually.

Everything from the foods you eat to when you eat them can play a part in causing this. The causes are many and you need to recognize them so you may avoid them, and keep yourself from relying on taking pill after pill, which only mask the problem, not solve it.

The most obvious cause is food itself. When you explore acid reflux information regarding food, you will discover that certain products can irritate your digestive process. Things like peppermint, citrus, chocolate, alcohol and whole milk can not only relax the muscles but can also encourage the production of more stomach acid, which will just build until there is nowhere for it to go but up into your esophagus.

You will have to find out which foods cause your symptoms; as not all people have the same problems. It is recommended, though, if you are particularly susceptible to acid reflux, that you avoid heavy fried foods and items that contain high levels of salt.

Another cause of acid reflux is the way you eat your food. People often enjoy late-night snacks before they go to bed. This is a bad idea!

You need to give your body at least three hours to process the food. That way, you will not risk putting too much pressure on your stomach when sleeping.

Another thing to remember is proper posture. How you sit can easily effect how food slides down the throat. Do not lean or bend forward after eating.

With acid reflux info, you can know how to do more than just rely on medication. You can recognize the causes before symptoms start and know what to do about them.
