Changing your Lifestyle can lower your risk for Diabetes

By: Julia Hanf Why any particular person gets diabetes isn't completely known. Complicating the situation is the fact that there are different types of the disease, though Type 1 and Type 2 are the most common. Of those, Type 2 accounts for about 90% of cases.

Fortunately for those who are at risk, many factors are lifestyle choices and therefore can be altered. Even after contracting the disease, much of the management of the disease involves controllable issues.

The most significant controllable risk factor for Type 2 diabetes is obesity. Obesity can be controlled through diet and exercise, even in individuals with a genetic tendency to be overweight. A high BMI (body mass index) is usually an indicator of obesity; fortunately, BMI's can be lowered.

People with a BMI of 27 or higher can be at high risk for diabetes. Keep in mind that a high BMI does not always indicate obesity. Pregnant women and highly muscular people may have a high BMI without being truly obese, so people with high BMI's should be examined for other indicators of obesity.

Fat storage as well as obesity plays a role in the risk of diabetes. The tendency to store fat around the waist significantly raises the risk of diabetes. Where people store fat is genetically influenced, but fortunately it can still be controlled with diet and exercise.

Exercise is almost a magic formula to control diabetes, since it attacks several of the disease's risk factors. Unsteady glucose levels, high blood pressure and high bad cholesterol are all risk factors for diabetes. Exercise is "magic" because it can help control each of these risk factors.

Though the risk of contracting diabetes is present for anyone, it's good to know you can drive it to much lower odds by adopting healthy choices.
