Europeans worked to create better skin graft techniques, and later, in 1827, an American physician, John Peter Mettauer did the first procedure to repair a cleft palate.

Finally, late in that century, men and women began wanting cosmetic surgery for reasons that were only aesthetic. It was usually not talked about, and was not a wide spread thing. However, between 1997 and 2002, the number of cosmetic surgical procedures jumped over 200% in those five years! Suddenly, the number of surgeons and available procedures skyrocketed to meet an unprecedented demand.
