Chihuahua Potty Training: Fast And Easy

By: Sandra Dean Chihuahua potty training is something that every owner seems to fear if they have not gone through this process before. While it seems that there isn't a lot that a little Chihuahua can mess up with the little amount that they can hold, many people fear the fact that they cannot hold their bladders for very long because of their size and that Chihuahua training will be very difficult. But while some of that may be true, there is no reason why this training period has to be a stressful time.
Now before you begin any potty training with your dog, it is very important to deeply think about where you will want your dog to go potty for the next several years. Whether it is inside on a potty training pad or outside in the yard, you need to make sure you pick one place that your dog can go to at all times. Also, consider where you live and what the weather conditions are there throughout the year.
Before beginning your Chihuahua potty training, you may want to look into getting a crate to use for your training purposes. Many professionals and dog training books also suggest the use of crate training for many reasons. The biggest reason is that your dog will not eliminate in the crate as it is it's home, or the place where it sleeps. To understand what size of crate your Chihuahua needs, know that you are looking for something long enough for him to lay down in with comfort yet not so big that they can make one end their bathroom and the other end their living area.
Also, for safety concerns, you will want to make sure the size of the holes between the crate's bars are not so big where the dog may get their head stuck, which can cause serious medical and emotional damage. Check the corners of the crate and anywhere that your Chihuahua can and will come into contact with and make sure that there are no sharp edges that can cause injury. If using a crate with a plastic or metal floor, be sure to add a blanket so the cold floor does not make him sick.
For when you are not home and for during the nights, this crate will serve as your dog's home away from home during your Chihuahua potty training experience. Make sure that you place them in their crate with a positive attitude and never use their crate as a place to go for punishment as they will soon resent being in there.
As long as you make it comfortable for them and use it as a place of relaxation for them instead as a place of punishment, then they will feel relaxed and safe within the walls of their crate. Keep your dog in the crate at night while you sleep and while you are away from home.
Limit food and water to meal times only as this will help control the amount of times your dog will need to go potty. During Chihuahua potty training, it is important to take your dog to their potty location within ten minutes after eating or drinking anything. Every time you bring them out of their crate, take them directly to their potty location so they can do what they need to do.
You will soon see that they instinctively hold their bladder so they can go outside their crate and before you know it, your pup will be completely potty trained.
