Diabetic Diet: 6 Important Principles To Consider

By: Delynda Lardone Discovering how to eat correctly when you are diagnosed with diabetes is essential in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Understanding the proper nutrition you need is vital, along with watching your sugar intake. Here are 6 guidelines you can follow when you are trying to deal with your diabetic diet.

The first rule is to make sure you watch your weight. If you do not watch your weight, you will become overweight and this will eventually lead to a worse condition. So, you need be cautious about the foods you eat on a daily basis to make sure that you do not increase your body's sugar level. If you body's sugar level increases, this will make your pancreas work double time which will ultimately lead to it failing. This will result in lots of extra sugar running throughout your system and thus causing great damage to your other organs. By implementing a good diabetic diet combined with an exercise program you should be able to maintain a healthy existence.

The second rule is to make sure you eat the good carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, and try not eating the bad carbohydrates, simple carbohydrates. The complex carbohydrates are better for diabetics to eat because they are absorbed by our body much slower and thus help keep our bodies with a steady sugar level. These foods contain vegetables, whole grain foods, brown rice, beans, and fruit. The simple carbohydrates are bad for diabetics because our body absorbs the sugar at a much faster rate, overworking the pancreas, and thus leaving extra sugar in your system which is bad. These foods which contain the bad carbohydrates are all the goodies we desperately love to eat are foods like candies, sweets and cakes.

The third guideline is to watch your fatty foods intake. Eating to much fatty foods can lead to major health issues like kidney disease and heart problems. The bad fat in the foods we need to avoid is saturated fats which are commonly found in the foods we love to eat like fast foods and margarines. The good fat that we should include in our diet, to keep our bodies healthy, is called monounsaturated fats which are found in canola oil and virgin olive oil.

The fourth rule is to steer clear of how much alcohol your drink. You see, alcohol behaves just like simple carbohydrates. Once drank, it rapidly turns into sugar. If you drink too much of it at once, this will cause a huge spike in your blood sugar level which can lead to many other bad things happening.

A fifth tip is to include more fiber in your daily diet. Adding fiber to your diet can significantly lower your blood sugar level. You should increase your daily fiber intake slowly to avoid bloating and gas and you should drink at least 8 cups of a beverage to avoid constipation. Fiber is found only in plant food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, and nuts.

The sixth guideline is to add some extra vitamin E in your daily diet. Studies have shown that consuming some extra vitamin E on a daily basis can prevent blood clots, prevent the formation of fatty plaque on your artery walls, and prevents blood vessels from swelling.

Living with diabetes does to have to be a hard task. Just adding these six rules into your daily diabetic diet can make your life much easier. It will also provide you with a much healthier lifestyle.
