Discover The Benefits Of Taking Licorice For Acid Reflux Pain

By: Kathryn Whittaker Those who have to live with heartburn day in and day out want nothing more than to get some relief. There are over-the-counter and prescription medicines that might work well, but some people hope to relieve the pain without taking something like that. Well you may consider taking licorice for acid reflux pain and discomfort. Licorice root has been around for many years as an effective treatment for many ailments, including acid reflux, but there are some problems that can occur if you don’t know what you are doing.

The pain that comes from acid reflux is a result of the acid from the stomach going where it should not be. It can leave the stomach and travel up into the throat and the mouth. When this happens, the tissues along the way will suffer. This type of tissue was not designed to cope with acid, and damage is likely to occur. Damage can be done to your teeth if acid is in the mouth, and there might also be problems with breathing and with sinus infections. This burning feeling is very hard to live with, and relief is something that can be hard to find at times.

A reflux sufferer should ideally make some changes to how they live in order to help control some of the problems. An overweight person might have some relief simply by losing weight. Extra weight can stop the muscular valve at the top of the stomach from closing properly, and this cause behind the acid splashing back into the esophagus.

Alcohol is known to be a problem, as is smoking, so if a person were to quit both of these, that might offer a great amount of relief. Certain over-the-counter drugs like aspirin and NSAIDs (like Advil, for example) can also aggravate symptoms. A new sleeping position might also be in order as well. A person who sleeps with the head elevated up above the stomach will find relief at night in most cases.

Licorice root can also help along with the above mentioned lifestyle changes. However you will want to look for a product labelled as DGL, which stands for DeGlycyrrhizinated Licorice. Licorice naturally contains a substance known as glycyrrhizin , which can cause a rise in blood pressure. So, taking DGL removes this risk.

Some studies have been done, and the conclusion is that this natural remedy might be just as effective as many prescriptions, and at times even work better. It will depend on the particular case involved.

It is considered a natural remedy, but remember that natural items can be very powerful when ingested. You should discuss your options with your doctor before trying it to be sure you are safely taking it and that there aren’t going to be any harmful side effects.

If you think you would like to take licorice for acid reflux relief, talk to your doctor about your plans. Dosages vary between once or twice a day. This will depend on how back your case might be, and how your doctor wants you to proceed. If they say that it would be bad for you, you should really listen to their advice and try something they say will be safe.

If you already have high blood pressure, taking licorice for acid reflux relief is probably not for you. Also remember that lifestyle changes can help greatly. You may find you can get rid of your prescriptions once you get things under control.
