Discovering the Side Effects of Insomnia

By: Lewis Lawson Insomnia is more common than you may think. Fortunately, those who suffer usually do so in sporadic episodes that don't last for very long. Those with temporary suffering can typically relate their insomnia to a life event, a situation that causes great worry or an annoying situation that prevents them from sleeping.

A small group of Americans suffer from the type of insomnia that lasts more than just a few nights and may struggle with sleeplessness for weeks at a time. Sometimes, the persistent insomnia is so severe it can last for months or years. The insomnia sufferers who deal with chronic insomnia really know what the side effects associated with insomnia can mean to a normal life.

Determining what type of insomnia you are suffering from is the first step to dealing with the side effects of the condition. There are generally three different types of insomnia and all sufferers fall into one of the three categories. Some will be able to not fall asleep at all, some will fall asleep but will wake every few hours and other will be able to sleep for three hours but then wake for the rest of the night.

Over the counter medication is often sought after when someone is suffering with insomnia. However, many of the available sleep aids can't address all three of the types of insomnia and only focus on falling asleep. Those who can fall asleep, but not stay asleep, often find these sleep aids only leave them more tired when they do wake in the night.

Side effects noted by individuals suffering from insomnia of any kind usually deal with headaches and an inability to concentrate. In conjunction with a pronounced irritability that affects those around the insomniac, these make social interactions and even working relationships sometimes hard to endure. While the insomniac may attempt to not let the lack of restful sleep interfere, sooner rather than later the natural resources are used up and the sufferer finds that just maintaining an even keel is getting harder to do.

When an insomniac's natural energy reserves are depleted, the condition can be quite dangerous. Simple tasks like driving can become dangerous situations. The suffering person may find they are at a much higher risk for being in a traffic accident or even being put at danger as a pedestrian.

Sometimes unwise lifestyle choices are made when those suffering from insomnia realize their lack of sleep is adversely affecting the rest of their life. They often reach out toward legal stimulants to counteract their lack of sleep. These over the counter substances are often dangerous and can lead to other health issues when used often.

Insomniacs will sometimes attempt to gain the sleep they lack by self medicating on the backend and thus seek to invite sleep by overindulging in alcohol and some recreational drugs. This is dangerous not only for the insomniac but also for her or his loved ones! Fortunately, there are plenty of treatments available which permit insomniacs to once again find the rest they so desperately need.
