Edible Delights: Food for Parties

By: Natalie Delfos It is popularly said that food is the fuel for any party or partygoers. Tasty and yummy food can change a dull party into the liveliest one. The party's echoing success generally depends upon the food served there, as it becomes the chief highlight and remains fresh on the memory of the attendants.

The first thing to do is select a theme for your party, which can be as simple as a superhero theme for a child's birthday party or a sophisticated theme for an elegant evening party. If you decide on the theme in accordance with the occasion you will have no difficulty in choosing the menu. Of course, the theme of the party must cater to the overall feel for the party. You must determine whether you want a fun and casual party or a high culture and elegant theme.

After you have chosen and theme and feel for your party, decide on the style and time of day. For example, a dinner party should not take place at four o’clock in the afternoon. Furthermore, a tea party should not take place at ten o’clock in the morning. Usually, people have certain expectations at certain times. If a party is planned for five o’clock in the evening, most individuals will expect a cocktail party with hordeurves and mixed drinks. An event to take place at eleven o’clock in the morning is generally expected to be a brunch with a mixture of breakfast and lunch options served.

The food and menu set the real tone of the party. After you're through with the initial planning the next task is to select the menu. Menu entirely depends upon the theme of the party. One possibly cannot serve snails and lobsters in children's party, whereas serving cheese sandwiches and noodles at adult party might not be a good idea. Choosing the best menu is the sure shot recipe for success of your party.

It's part of party etiquette to choose the favorite menu of the person in whose honor you are throwing a specific party like a birthday, shower, or anniversary party. Serve that person's signature beverage and his or her favorite foods or desserts.

You should also consider items that can be messy to consume, and avoid them, especially for a cocktail event or one with only snacks. It's best to choose options that can be eaten cleanly with one hand in a single bite. Avoid things like buffalo wings that can be eaten in a single bite, but are simply too messy to consume. Instead choose mini quiche, bite sized baked goods, meat or cheese on crackers, or small sandwiches for your party fare.

You can be really creative when it comes to choosing your dessert. The trend, these days, is to have a variety of desserts instead of a single, main attraction. Some brides prefer to have small wedding cakes for each guest instead of the large traditional cake.

Your party is what you make of it. Regardless the style of your party, its success depends on the choice of the food you serve. All else is secondary. Your guests will soon forget the color linens you used or the purpose of the party, but they will remember the delicious roast or smooth cocktail for a long time.
