Get Results Through Abdominal Liposuction

By: Michelle Bery There's few among us who don't struggle with extra pounds around our middle. Whether it’s the result of poor diet, inactivity, or even childbirth, that tummy fat can be both unattractive and dangerous to our health - putting unnecessary strain on our hearts. And while we may have taken control of our eating habits and begun the consistent exercise that's important for burning fat, we still can't rid ourselves of the extra weight. In many cases, even people in excellent health and in top physical condition, are unable to completely eradicate the tire around their middle - even if there are muscles underneath it. For millions of people this challenge has led them to consider abdominal liposuction.

Abdominal liposuction is a surgical procedure wherein fat deposits are removed from the mid-section through a "vacuuming" process. Several small incisions are made in the abdominal area through which a suctioning device is inserted and fat is removed. Abdominal liposuction is an out-patient procedure and can normally be accomplished in a matter of hours. The patient is normally given a compression garment to wear following the abdominal liposuction and mild to moderate pain relievers. The result, if successful, is a flatter, smoother stomach and patients report a drop in pant sizes and the ability to wear clothes they were not previously able to wear. It’s no wonder, based on these accounts, that abdominal liposuction is the most performed liposuction procedure in the United States today.

However, there are some important things to remember when considering abdominal liposuction. First and foremost, it is absolutely imperative that you have your procedure performed by a reputable, experienced surgeon. You can never be too careful when researching plastic surgeons; disreputable surgeons of this kind have been too often cited with botched procedures resulting in disfigurement and even death. Take the steps necessary to ensure that your surgeon has had no complaints lodged against him; ask for referrals and speak directly to patients who have also had the abdominal liposuction as performed by this particular surgeon; determine the surgeon’s level of experience – the abdominal liposuction should be a procedure he performs often; and, be sure that you are comfortable with the cleanliness of the office, professionalism of the staff, and thoroughness of surgery preparation including the answering of all your questions.

Ultimately, the recovery from an abdominal liposuction rests squarely on the shoulders of the patient. The surgeon will give you a list of strict instructions and following them to the letter will mean a speedy recovery and successful surgical result. Be sure to follow any and all dietary restrictions, as well as the guidelines for physical activity following surgery, and the steps for wound care. You will undoubtedly have post-surgical visits where the surgeon will be able to tell – quite quickly – if you have been following instructions.

Remember, once you leave the operating room, the success of your abdominal liposuction depends on appropriate after-care and proper recovery.
