Get Rid of Processed Foods!

By: Simon Dainton Go to any supermarket these days and you will be bombarded by the amount of choice now open to you in the way of food. The problem is that there are now more fake foods than fresh produce on sale! The majority of foods available to you are now processed. Your body doesn’t do well on these foods. They’re a shock to the body’s digestive system, requiring more effort to digest, use and ‘poop out’ than they provide in nutritional value.

Processed products contain a whole host of chemicals, additives and artificial flavourings that the body just can’t use. Huge stress is placed on your liver and your digestion as a result. Pick up a product, like a microwave meal or a pack of cooked meat, and read the ingredients. You’ll find a whole host of unpronounceable items listed, used to colour, stabilise, emulsify, bleach, texture, soften, preserve, sweeten, add or cover smells and ‘flavour’.

By reducing these foods in your diet, you will see a big difference in your health and wellbeing, as well as a reduction in your sugar and salt intake. Stick to the fresh food sections of your supermarket and give your body a much needed break. If a food product didn’t come directly from the ground, the sea or from an animal, it’s more than likely processed. As a rule, avoid white flour products as much as possible. Give these foods a wide berth!

The occasional microwave meal or packet sandwich won’t do you much harm, but if these kinds of foods are cropping up in your diet on a regular basis then you are simply kidding yourself if you think that you can lose weight, become healthier and look and feel better. The only path to optimal health is a diet high in fresh produce and natural ingredients.

SIMON’S TIPS: PROCESSED FOOD

Look out for ingredients that you don’t recognise. If you find long unpronounceable ingredients, put the product back on the shelf and keep walking!

Avoid all ‘convenience’ foods. Ready-made meals, foods designed for microwave cooking and ‘flavoured’ drinks and foods.

Look for the expiry date. The longer it lasts, the less nutritious value it is likely to provide your body.

Don’t be fooled by ‘healthy-looking’ products. Any product marketed as healthy is likely to be processed – low-fat meals, spreads etc.

Don’t buy products claiming to be ‘fortified’, ‘enriched’ or with ‘added’ vitamins. Food processing kills off key vitamins and minerals. Food manufacturers add synthetic replacements back in after processing, to bring them up to standard. Leave alone.
Use your common sense. Where possible, choose foods that are in their natural state. Be alert to clues in a product’s ingredient listing such as colourings and flavourings, and avoid meat products described as ‘reformed’.
