Great Tips For Motivating An Addiction Recovery Patient

By: Chris Channing Any type of goal in life is going to be tough to achieve, but through ample motivation, virtually anything can be accomplished. This holds true for addiction recovery patients who need to keep confident and secure in their attempt to overcome and addiction. But doing so, as many will find, can be a difficult task to achieve.

A recovering addict may have some trouble in finding motivation, but just like many things are taught in life, positive reinforcement can prove to be a very powerful aspect indeed. When one rewards one's self for a good action, there is natural motivation to continue the addiction-free attitude that obtained the reward. This can be as simple as buying luxurious chocolate, or as elegant as obtaining a first class massage.

Asking for help from others is always a great way to stay free from an addiction. If one doesn't have enough time or energy to perform allotted tasks, they may resort to an addiction in order to give themselves a break. But in the long run, going back to a previous addiction will only hurt the recovery victim even more. Thus, be sure to consult friends and family members with things you might need help with instead of carrying the burden completely.

Obtaining higher education is often an overlooked way of staying free from an addiction. Higher education facilities are a lot of work, but provide genuine motivation to succeed in life. The homework and extracurricular activities also help to keep one's mind away from an addiction problem. This option requires a nice sum of money however, and isn't always plausible for low income individuals.

Going into a recovery program with someone else is a sure way to better one's chances of success. If an addiction to alcohol is present, one might try to get their friends to stop drinking alcohol with them. This can not only remove peer pressure, but it can also give recovering addicts a means of better stopping their addiction. After all, no one likes to go through things alone in life!

Keeping records of how long that one has achieved the success of staying free from an addiction is a great idea. Marking out days on the calendar in big red "X" marks is a great visual for those who need some extra motivation. After all, when you meet someone and they say they have been free of an addiction for 5 years, you can probably note that they won't be starting that addiction again anytime soon.

Final Thoughts

Getting over an addiction long term is just as simple as being motivated. Staying motivated is as easy as following the mentioned steps above, as well as finding out other ways to motivate one's self, raise one's confidence, and how to remove stress and frustration from one's life. Doing so will keep one too busy, happy, and productive to ever even think about reverting to a previously held addiction.
