How Stress Changes The Way Our Body Works

By: Andrew John Stress influences functions of our bodies in numerous ways. Most of the effects are negative as stress is known to cause serious physical and psychological problems, so we should do our best to deal with it as soon as possible.

We all more or less know how the effects of stress look like. The heart beats faster, breath becomes faster and shorter bringing, the digestive system is shut down as the body concentrates on giving us the best chance in the fight or run. Muscles tighten and get ready to rapid movement, but at the same time secondary body functions such as talking and eating suffer. The "dry mouth" effect typical for stressful situations is caused by the fact that blood is directed to muscles and lunges rather than to mouth, causing troubles with talking. The fact that stomach shuts itself down makes it extremely hard to swallow anything, and even harder to digest the food. This may lead to serious stomach problems such as cramps.

The damages stress can do to both mind and the body are very serious. Stomach cramps, risk of a heart stroke and insomnia are only a few examples of what stress can do to your body. If you add to that the risk of severe depression (and certainty of a mild depression), feeling of loneliness and tendency to avoid other people, it clear that we have to get rid of the stress as soon as possible. Otherwise the risk both to our health and to our social life is too high to be ignored.

Stress is also incredibly dangerous for one's relationships as well as family and social life. People in stress are known to shut themselves off their loved ones and their behaviour makes it often difficult for others to be around. Stressed people are usually very aggressive and annoyed due to the large quantities of "fight or run" hormone in the bloodstream, making them feel upset even about the smallest details. Unsurprisingly those who love them most are among those most strongly affected by the situation. Fortunately, it can be helped if only loved ones show the person some help and understanding.
