How to Treat Diverticulitis

By: JessicaThomson The Diverticulitis Treatment depends on the intensity of the disease. Less severe and more severe symptoms determine the treatment procedure of diverticulitis. If the attack of diverticulitis is for the first time and the symptoms are not that severe then the treatment is quire easy. Low-fiber diet coupled with antibiotics does the trick then. However if the signs and symptoms are more severe in nature or the attacks are recurring then the treatment is more advanced. Here are the treatment procedures of diverticulitis -
Home treatment:
When the attack of the diverticulitis is for the first time and there are fewer risks of complications then a rest for couple of days in home is prescribed. In addition to the rest there is also a temporary ban on the consumption of fruits, grains and vegetables. The diet has to be comprised of low fiber food to rest the colon and help it to heal. However when the pain reduces and the condition is a bit better which normally does not take more than four to five days, the fiber content in the diet maybe gradually increased. It is expected that the doctor along with home rest would also prescribe a course antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the disease. It is very important to complete the course to avoid recurring of the disease.
Treatment in hospital:
Hospitalization becomes necessary when the attack is more potent as well as painful. If the symptoms include obstruction in passing bowel or peritonitis then intravenous antibiotics are prescribed.
Operation:
When the attacks of diverticulitis become recurring then the doctor may opt surgery for Diverticulitis Treatment. By surgery the affected part of the colon is removed. There are two types of surgical procedures depending on the severity of the condition. Here are the two types of operation done to cure diverticulitis:
1) Primary bowel resection - in this kind of surgery the infected part of the intestine is removed and the unaffected and the healthy part of the colon are reconnected. This ensures painless bowel movement. Depending upon the swelling and tenderness open surgery or laparoscopic surgery is done.
2) Bowel resection with colostomy - this kind of surgery is done when the Inflammation is so much that it is not possible to reconnect the rectum with the colon. Colostomy is a temporary procedure in which colon is connected to an opening made by the surgeon to ensure the passing of bowel. Once the inflammation reduces it becomes possible for the doctors to perform bowel resection and reconnect the colon with rectum.
