Keeping Time in the Production Based Business World

By: Kingston J. Amadan The phrase “timing is everything” can be applied to so many aspects in the world of business. From acquisitions to developments, timing can mean the difference between the ultimate success and colossal failure. In terms of a business’ human resources, however, effective timekeeping is rarely considered an important part of the overall management process. The importance of proper timekeeping goes far beyond accuracy in payroll and benefits eligibility. Time and attendance management can help companies identify key areas where improvements to productivity can be made for better return on investment and a larger bottom line.

Today’s time and attendance software suites offer many of the same features, and most are suitable for companies outside of the manufacturing and production industries. Offering the capability to merge the power of data processing and reporting with hardware interfaces such as swipe terminals and electronic time recorders, applications such as these allow for greater efficiency and reduced error rates in the administration of timekeeping for human resources management purposes.

For businesses involved in the manufacturing of goods, however, some time and attendance software applications have much more to offer. Businesses such as these rely on efficiency to maximize profits, and improved efficiency can only be realized by allocating resources where they are most effective. This is as true for business capital as it is for personnel, yet few manufacturers are able to make the connection.

In a manufacturing environment, productivity can be measured and cross referenced with time and attendance data to develop a workflow model that maximizes production capabilities. From staggered shifts to direct and indirect managerial supervision, almost every aspect of time and attendance can be viewed from a cost to benefit perspective. Surprisingly, few manufacturing companies and production houses take advantage of the possibilities inherent with time and attendance software applications.

For those who do, the reward can go well beyond productivity. Employees can also benefit from policies designed to enhance workplace productivity, as impeding factors are usually the cause of lower production rates. Just as many centralized businesses utilize a staggered schedule to reduce the number of workers arriving at a facility at any one given time for traffic reduction, manufacturers can reduce noise, pollution, hazardous conditions and overcrowding. These nuisances can not only reduce productive capacity by becoming a major source of frustration for employees, but also present long term health hazards that could be avoided.
