LASIK Eye Surgery

By: Blind Granny LASIK is a vision correction operation. When successful, many people don't need their glasses ever again. This procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea.

First you will need to see your eye surgeon to see if you are a good candidate to have a LASIK surgery. One of the problems would be refractive instability. If your vision isn't stable you usually won't risk a LASIK surgery.

Other reasons you might not be able to use LASIK could be: previous eye surgery, eye injuries, and certain eye diseases, to name a few.

Getting ready for LASIK surgery will work something like this. If you are a contact wearer, you need to stop wearing them for a designated amount of time before surgery. This is because your contact lenses alter the shape of your cornea.

Things are pretty then straight forward. First you need to keep creams, lotions, make up, and perfumes off of you for one day before the surgery. This is to prevent any type of infections or irritations in the eyes.

This operation is done as an outpatient procedure. It takes less than an hour to complete, closer to thirty minutes. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery. You will be medicated and could have blurred vision as well.

During the surgery you will be asked to focus on a point of light. The ability to do to this, for a minute or so, is required to do the surgery. You will be tested to make sure this won't be a problem.

During the procedure you will not be able to blink to mess anything up. There will be a flap of eye peeled back to expose the part of the cornea to be reshaped. A laser will then vaporize the proper areas that correctly reshape the cornea.

After the operation you will need to wear a shield over the eye to prevent rubbing while healing occurs. The flap that was cut to expose the tissue that was removed must heal.

Hard contact activities should be avoided for a few weeks. This would include, football or boxing, anything that could jolt the eye. Keeping the lotions, creams, and makeup off for a few days will help prevent any infections.

Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn't see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
