Lawn Mover - Are You Using It Correctly?

By: Glen Crawford Saturday morning is the time for the lawn mover army to report for duty in most neighborhoods throughout the US. This is the day that the lawns are trimmed and clipped to perfection. For some people, mowing lawns is a lifelong passion, and a labor of love, and for others a necessary chore that has to be done as quickly as possible so that the day can be spent on more interesting pursuits.

For those of us that look forward to spending time with our best friend lawn mover, we see the end result of our manicured lawns and are well satisfied with our efforts. The difference that neat gardens and well maintained lawns make is well documented, often adding many thousands of dollars to the value of a home. Most gardeners will tell you however; that it is the satisfaction of seeing their lush lawns and gardens that is the driving force behind their weekly lawn mowing tasks.

For the new gardener, or first home buyer who finds himself the owner of not only a new house but a fabulous looking lawn, the decision to purchase a lawn mover can be quite a challenging one. It's OK for those of us who have grown up with lawn moving for pocket money on a Saturday morning, because we do have some idea on what features we like. If you want to purchase a lawn mover that is going to be problem free and last for a good many years, then expect to pay a good price for it.

You need to consider several things before you purchase your lawn mover. The size of your lawns is one thing, as once you get over 1/2 an acre a ride-on lawn mower is going to be the best choice. Your budget of course will also play an important role in your choice. Fitness and wellness are also aspects to be considered. Many people will choose a self-propelled push lawn mover if they are retired or who have less than perfect health.

Mowing lawns does not have to be difficult; in fact most people want it to be easy. Quick and easy is more to the point, as most of us have such busy lifestyles that there isn't much time left to be spent on keeping our lawns beautiful. Even though we may like spending time on our lawns, most of us also want to relax and enjoy our weekends.

The lawn mover now residing in suburban garden sheds is a vastly improved machine of the past. They are no longer quite as noisy, they are easy to start and a joy to use. Their temperamental side has at last well and truly been calmed.

The first lawn mover made its appearance around 150 years ago. This was the simple reel mower which was invented in the late 1820's. This type of mover is still used today by a small number of people who find that it is perfect to maintain their patch of lawn. What they lose in technology they more than make up by being so environmentally friendly.

It was our obsession with outdoor sports such as cricket, tennis and lawn bowls that saw the need for far more technologically advanced lawn cutting machines to keep the grass in perfect condition. It was then just a matter of time before these professional machines were adapted for home use. The rotary-blade lawn mover was invented in the 1930's, and now some 70 years later this type of push lawn mover is still one of the most popular models produced.
