Living in Murcia

By: RussellMarsh Murcia City, Spain (one of the best places anywhere!) is a City of many faces and boasts a rich mix of old architecture, trendy shops and enough variety of guest houses, cafes and pubs to suit just about anyone! Getting a room is probably less stressful than in most large places and good value can be achieved. Whatever your frame of mind (the odd night I just need a simple meal, other times I'm ready to enjoy a good drink followed by some late night clubbing) Murcia can provide your fancy..

The Casino (constructed in 1847), in Trapería, has a magnificent Arab patio, a barogue ballroom and lots of other fantastically decorated halls and rooms with baroque ornate plaster. Really it's more of a luxury Gentlemen's Club than what you'd think of as a casino these days but go there if you can, it's Gorgeous

The Cathedral is the centrepiece of the Town in truth. It was built from the 14th to the 18th centuries and really typifies the various building techniques of those times. There are four special features of this cathedral of special interest to the visitor: The Baroque face of the “Puerta del Perdón”; The Renaissance “Junterones” chapel; The cathedral tower which is 96 metres tall and boasts 25 bells: Also you have to see the Diocesan Museum.

Other architecturally fascinating points of interest you daren't miss are the Teatro Romea and the City Hall (Ayuntamiento), whose baroque facades come from the 14th century. You must also visit the region's awesome artistic roots in plenty of museums, art galleries and exhibition halls that make up an important part of the city's excellent intellectural life: Salzillo Museum (what a fantastic artist this chap was!); The Bullfighting Museum (some exhibits for the strong stomach...); The Archaeological Museum; The Ramón Gaya Museum (dedicated to this local artist in 1990, he was 82 then; The Museum of Fine Arts.. There are absolutely loads of pieces from other local talents also. Ramón was influenced by Rembrandt - to let you see a glimpse of the style..; The Palacio Almudí Art Centre; and so the list goes on.. If architecture and culture are your interest then a fantastic vacation can be had in Murcia.

One unusual feature here to show us Murcia's industrial history is that a lot of the roads are named after the goods that were once traded on them, for example Traperia (cloth), Plateria (silver).

Hotels in Murcia cover the full spectrum of standards to suit all people from 5 star opulence to a little bed and breakfast and cafes and restaurants abound in the lots of little squares to suit all wallets and tastes. If you just want a good night out there are plenty of trendy and some not so nice bars to have a night out in.

Shopping is a particular occupation for my partner more than me. (I'm not alone here I bet..) She has told me that she doesn't have to go out of town to buy shoes so that says to me the whole shopping experience in Murcia County must be pretty comprehensive!! No, really though, there are plenty of good shops and you can buy anything you need here. There are some really cool trendy shops and the workers here are nice enough though in some it would be best if you could speak Spanish.. Overall, Murcia County is a lovely place to visit or live near which is what I do..
