Maximizing A Blog's Affiliate Income

By: Jeff Alderson Finding a wonderful new affiliate program that promises big money rewards can feel like hitting the lottery. Many who do sign up, send their referral links out to a few sources and put them on their sites and then sit and wait for the cash to start flowing.

Sadly, while money can come from the above measures, the reality is it often takes a little more work than that to make these programs pay off. Getting involved with a great affiliate program is just the starter for making it pay off. Putting links up in forums, on one's own site and e-mailing people about the program is a good step to take. There are, however, quite a few more things you can do to increase affiliate program potential. Content is often the key to boosting earnings.

Proven methods are available for bloggers and publishers to take advantage of to increase their potential earnings from affiliate programs. If the affiliate program happens to be new, the potential can be even higher. The amount of elbow grease that needs to go into a promotion will depend on the site publisher's choice of action and willingness to work somewhat.

With new affiliate programs, it is very possible for publishers to get ahead of the competition by crafting posts early. If content about the program, its product or service is informative, accurate and balanced, your site can rank early on the topic and become a noted "authority" on it. The key here is to be honest, informative and interesting with posts or articles. Try to work the right keywords in, especially in titles and lead paragraphs. When you have the opportunity to strike early, don't waste it.

When you write about the topic at hand, there are a few things to keep in mind. Those who write posts that are objective, conversational and informative, tend to do much better. The idea is to become the authority. This means if others have already written a piece, do better than they did. Go for more in-depth reviews, added information and so on. Quote and link other authority sources, too. Just make sure your angle is different from what else has been done. Honesty is always a good policy, too. No one wants to read a sales piece. Include the bad with the good if bad is there.

Posts on the affiliate program's topic should include keywords, but do use some caution when setting them. In all honesty, keywords can bog pieces down and make them sound less informative. Try to use the right words or phrases in the title and maybe even in a few paragraphs, but don't stuff or overload an article. Voice, clarity and quality information are far more important than keywords when it comes to gaining traffic and loyalty.

Linking to other sites that have written about the topic can actually be rather valuable in the process, too. When you link to another site, a trackback comes up. This can lead that site's readers to your site. It's not at all a bad thing to link to other articles, especially if they come from sites that are popular and well trafficked.

There are other ways to increase revenue with content in regard to affiliate programs. Presell pages can be rather valuable. These are pages offset on a blog or website that have their own URL. These pages are used to include the affiliate information, reviews and other content. Within these pages, blog publishers who use them, often include their affiliate links. This can be a very useful way to gain credibility and keep affiliate links from clogging up a home page. These pages can deliver traffic, too. It is often easier to get them ranked on their own in regard to the topic.

It is also quite possible to "borrow" traffic from other sites that are writing about the same topic. Doing this requires setting up Google Alerts or another similar program to alert you when others write about the issue. Visit their forums and drop the URL to your review along with relevant comments. Not all publishers feel this method is on the up and up, however.

Increasing a blog's affiliate program earning potential doesn't necessarily require a lot of advertising. The right content can often make all the difference in the world.
