Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution Recalled

By: Peter Kent After a serious and blinding eye disease was linked to the Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution from Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of cleaning solutions for contact lens, was discoverd the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommended a recall. AMO voluntarily recalled all of the bottles of Moisture Plus but not before several individuals were affected.

It is imperative that individuals who used the contact lens solution contact a medical profession if they experience any of these symptoms:

* eye pain or redness

* blurred vision

* sensitivity to light

* the feeling of something in the eye

* excessive tearing

Details of the Moisture Plus Recall

The disease, Acanthamoeba Keratitis, has been confirmed in 138 patients since the beginning of the outbreak in January 2005, according to the CDC. According to those who were infected, of the 46 intervied by CDC approximately 21 individuals had been linked to using the AMO brand of Moisture Plus. The disease itself is a keratitis, or an inflammation of the cornea, caused by the presence of the Acanthamoeba parasite. This corneal disease is both serious and difficult to treat, as it does not respond well to medication and can lead to loss of sight in the patient.

Although the CDC quickly linked the disease with the contact lens solution, AMO also quickly voluntarily recalled the solutions and advised users of the recent connection, recommending that the Moisture Plus solution be discarded.

Unsafe Contact Lens Solution?

The Moisture Plus recall is not the first conducted by AMO, as the company has had previous issues with contamination of its contact lens solution products.

AMO implemented a contact lens solution recall in late 2006 of 2.9 million units of the same Moisture Plus contact lens solution, after contamination was detected within the production line at a Chinese factory. Because of the history associated with the two recalls -- although unrelated -- with AMO, their safety records have been questioned. While no litigation has been presented against AMO for the alleged tainted Moisture Plus contact lens solution recall, it may be advisable that individuals who were affected by the recall contact an experienced attorney.
