Most Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women

By: Mark Hall One of the first things we look at on a person we meet whether we know them or not, is their hair. Women affected by hair loss become aware of how important hair is in their social lives. Additionally hair loss provokes not only feelings of cosmetic concern, but also a loss of self-esteem and can even lead to identity problems. This article will examine the most common causes of hair loss in women.

Generally male or female pattern baldness or hair loss is inherited. If your mom had problems with hair loss you are more likely to have it too. This may be a simplistic answer, but it is statistically proven in research studies.

Treatment for pattern baldness women is by the use of the sex development hormone we all produce called DHT which is at least a step in the right direction. Some shampoos; Rogaine is one such, stimulates the scalp and helps to reverse the hair loss and then pills like Provillus help control the hormone DHT that affects the hair follicles. Another treatment used to control pattern baldness is transplanting hair follicles from areas of the scalp which are not affected by increased amounts of DHT.

Both men and women can suffer with pattern-baldness which is caused by a hormone common to both sexes referred to as DHT. T.his hormone is just one responsible for the sexual development of humans. Fortunately it is possible to treat this. There are shampoos that work by stimulating the growth of hair, thus counteracting the effects of excessive hair loss. There are also hair loss products that help keep DHT levels normal so follicles are not flooded with it. Additionally, hair replacement treatments like transplant surgery are can be successful as the hair from the areas where the DHT level is higher are replaced by hair from other areas of the head that are not as sensitive to the hormone.

At any point in a person's life about 10 percent of the hair on their head is resting (not growing). After a few months, the resting hair falls out and new hair begins to grow in its place. This growing phase can last anywhere from 2 to 6 years. While it may seem frightening at first, this hair loss is quite normal. Hair normally grows at a rate of approximately one centimeter every month but some women lose hair for other reasons.

Some of the false reasons for hair loss are bad circulation, excess sweating, wearing hats that are too tight and even stress. Although stress can cause hair loss, this has only been shown to be the case in extreme stress situations which would not generally affect the average person and fortunately, in these circumstances, the situation can normally be rectified.

Of course there are other factors that can cause hair loss in women. Hair loss can occur with medical treatments that use chemotherapy, pills that control hormones, scalp infections, diseases like diabetes and even pills to control depression.
