Mouthwash- The Bane Of Bad Breath

By: Darren Wumoult Under normal conditions a mouthwash should help clear bad breath because it helps kill bacteria in the mouth and make it smell fresh. Sometimes, however, some kinds of mouthwash serve to aggravate the bad breath problem.
The reason for this is simple: some mouthwashes contain alcohol and if you are already having a bad breath problem the alcohol in the mouthwash aggravates the problem. It dries out the saliva which keeps your mouth moist and, in a dry mouth, bacteria thrive. If you need to use a mouthwash, do use an alcohol free one.
Don't forget to drink plenty of water along with your meal and even otherwise, because water hydrates you and flushes your mouth and your system. If you are eating with other people and do not have a toothbrush with you, you can go the restroom and rinse out your mouth with water and spit it out. The water loosens the food debris which may be stuck between your teeth and any food residue in your mouth as well. If you are with family and friends and you cannot, for any given reason, go to a restroom, you can do it at the table, except don't spit out the water, but swallow it.
Using mouthwash is good per se but it will be pointless unless you combine it with other healthy dental practices. The most basic of these are brushing and flossing regularly. Ideally, you should brush after every meal but since this is not practical for many people, brushing once in the morning and once before bedtime is considered sufficient. You must pay attention not only to your teeth but to your tongue and gums as well. One minute is the ideal time you should spend brushing according to most dentists. Once you are done brushing, you must rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and your favorite mouthwash.
Nevertheless, try to brush your teeth after every meal if at all possible. If you work during the day, bring your toothbrush and toothpaste with you if you can. You should also make sure to floss everyday. Discard your old toothbrush after using it for 3 months. If you keep using it for a longer period, bacteria will eventually build up and trigger the onset of bad breath.
Choosing the right toothbrush, dental floss or mouthwash can be difficult, considering the hundreds of brands currently available today. You can ask your dentist for a recommendation the next time you go for a dental checkup. The ideal frequency of these checkups should be at least once every 6 months. An annual checkup is actually sufficient if you do not have any dental problems. However, if you notice irregularities in your mouth such as pain and swelling in the gums, you must schedule and appointment right away.
Along with asking your dentist about the right toothbrush, you should also ask your dentist what brand of toothpaste is best to use if you do not already know. Usually fluoride toothpaste or one with baking soda and peroxide works the best. This along with flossing and rinsing will help keep your breath smelling fresh and will help keep your teeth white. Teeth whitening treatments can be used as well, and are often sold in most grocery stores by other toothpaste products. All the products mentioned in this article will help reduce the chance of bacteria infection in your mouth that leads to bad breath.
Bad breath is obviously a very serious problem that can affect you both physically and socially. However, this is not the most severe problem you are facing. Bad breath usually stems from a more serious oral infection due to negligence in dental care. For this reason alone, you must take extra care in keeping your mouth and teeth healthy at all times. If you are able to maintain good dental health, the risk of getting cavities, accumulating plaque and sustaining gum disorders will be greatly reduced. Furthermore, you can be assured that with a healthy mouth and teeth, you will be safe from getting bad breath.
