It is more common for someone to get a toenail infection than it is to have a fingernail infection. Toenail infections are more common because your feet are kept in dark, warm, moist places all day-- your shoes! Fungus thrives in those conditions. Our shoes and socks are the perfect breeding ground for fungus to grow, especially if your feet are prone to sweat.

Toenail fungus may also be more common because the feet do not have as good of ciculation as the hands. You immune system may have a harder time locating the infection and fighting it because the blood does not circulate through that area as much.

There are several things that you can do to prevent nail fungus. Prevention can include keeping your nails dry and clean, avoid walking barefoot in public places, and if you have touched an infected nail immediately wash your hand with soap and warm water. Also, you should change your socks often, do not re-use dirty socks.

Do not worry if you have a nail fungus infection, there are ways to treat it. Keep your nails in good condition and follow a treatment plan and your battle with nail fungus will soon be over!
