Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure Really Do Work

Perhaps the first thing you need to find out is what causes your blood pressure to go up in the first place. If it's something relatively simple to fix, such as improving your diet or getting more exercise, it may be easy to maintain at healthy levels.

Number one on the list to keep blood pressure levels at optimum is to get plenty of exercise. Exercise is important because it helps the blood circulate within your body. When you exercise, your heart pumps harder, which pushes more blood through your veins. In turn, this improves circulation and reduces blood pressure levels after exercise is complete. Of course, diet is also key. Eating right naturally helps lower blood pressure levels by reducing salt and increasing potassium levels. Stay away from or at least greatly minimize high sodium foods, high fat foods, and alcohol. If you consume these things in great quantities, you could be contributing to your high blood pressure, if not causing it outright.

If you are looking for healthy supplements to add to your diet to maintain lower levels then you can consider things like Coenzyme, garlic, hawthorn, and fish oil. Coenzyme has proven to be effective in reducing systolic blood pressure levels. People with high blood pressure who have type 2 level of diabetes also can benefit from taking Coenzyme.

Garlic, too, is a good way to improve your systolic blood pressure levels. However, you must stop taking garlic before surgery for a specified period of time, and after surgery as well. Because it can also interact with certain medications, you should check with your doctor before you included in your diet or take it as a supplement. You may need to avoid garlic altogether if you are taking things like Trental or Coumadin.

Another good supplement to consider for healthy blood pressure levels is the herb hawthorn. You diastolic blood pressure can be lowered when you take hawthorn. Thus far, no drug interactions have been found with hawthorn.

Yet another supplement that can be helpful in lowering blood pressure is fish oil. A beneficial substance called DHA is important for brain health and can best be found through fish oils. You should consider eating fish regularly, to three times a week. However, if you don't like fish, fish oil supplements can do the job just as well. This should have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure. Again, as with garlic, there are certain contraindications; check with your doctor to make sure fish oil is right for you.

In addition to medication, there are natural, healthy ways to reduce your blood pressure. These include changing your diet to include more potassium and less salt, exercising regularly, and taking supplements such as those mentioned in these articles as recommended by healthcare professionals. Exercise especially is beneficial because it helps improve circulation, and of course it should be done under the guidance of your physician. It may mean that you won't have to take medications "forever," but may simply need to take them for a short period of time as recommended by your doctor until your blood pressures under control; perhaps you can even avoid taking them altogether. Cholesterol, too, is of great impact when it comes to blood pressure. If your cholesterol is high, it may be beneficial to avoid taking cholesterol-lowering medications and focus on diet and exercise, as well as other lifestyle changes, instead. Again, this is something that should be done under the supervision of your doctor.
