Options In Wheelchairs Humbly Expained

By: Chris Channing Wheelchairs are great tools for giving the gift of mobility to those who had previously become unable to get around. But as consumers will see, there are far too many options to make an impulse decision right off. In fact, the process should be well thought out, so as to not waste one's money on a wheelchair that won't function as well as they had hoped.

The most basic of wheelchairs comes in the form of the manual type. Manual wheelchairs are great for temporary situations, or even for those who don't want to spend much money on a mobility solution. Also to consider is the fact that these solutions take upper body strength= something not everyone possesses, and therefore not everyone should apply for a manual wheelchair.

Wheelchairs that are powered by electricity are slightly more expensive, but also allow for much more maneuverability. Powered wheelchairs allow those who don't have the upper body strength to operate manual wheelchairs a chance to stay mobile more sensibly. Mobile wheel chairs are usually seen as more of a permanent solution, however, since they are indeed quite pricey. They will also weigh more on average, and will be bulkier and less able to be move around.

Powered scooters are, on average, a little pricier than the previously mentioned powered wheelchairs. Powered scooters will commonly allow for much more weight, although they only have specific scenarios in which to be used. Shopping or city travel, for instance, is a great way to take full advantage of a powered scooter. Indoor usage is at a big disadvantage, however, since scooters are often too bulky and too poor in turning radius to be of any good use.

Choosing the best wheelchair of the above options can be tough, although there are a few characteristics of each that should make for an easy decision. In the most extreme of cases, there is need for a companion wheelchair- which can only be operated by a helping assistant. In less severe situations, motorized and electrical wheelchairs or scooters should be used. And finally, the manual wheelchair should be a resort for those who are still strong and able- and don't want to spend much money on the alternatives.

Environmental concerns also come into play, in more than one way. First, those who wish to remain environmentally friendly should opt for the manual wheelchair, as it doesn't have any toxic omissions. If at all possible, the next resort should be an electric alternative. Lastly, the motorized types of mobility products should be investigated- as they are responsible for putting pollutants into the air where they presently weren't.

Final Thoughts

Wheelchairs are certainly a blessing for the walking impaired or handicapped. The trouble comes to be finding the best option for one's specific needs. From temporary solutions to the longer term, or even when concerning one's weight- there's often too much to consider all on one's own. In such a case, it's best to consult a health consultant for best options.
