Party Planning for Dummies

By: MaryAnn Raimey You can call me a slug and I won't take offense. I mean I enjoy parties and even love having them in my own home. There is nothing like the sparkle of good conversation. But the work involved can overwhelm me. First there is the cleaning (my home is never pristine). Then I have to shop and cook and think about the table decor. It's a bit much for someone who'd rather relax.

I love watching the Food Channel. And the cooking celebs make throwing a party look oh so easy. They have these fabulous looking meals that sit on designer like tables that could easily impress royalty. It's the ease of effort that tends to fool me. I start to think that it could be simple to take on a themed party. I mean if they can do it in 30 minutes, can't I do it in an hour or two?

Then reality strikes and I look at my home. It's a comfortable, nice home with plenty of room for guests. But it certainly does not have the "perfect dcor". I live a real life with two kids, a dog, and a husband. There are always dirty dishes in the sink and dusting to be done. I don't have a complete set of lovely dishes that perfectly match my tablecloth, and my kids refuse to eat anything "unique".

I hate to admit it, but all of this makes me feel a bit inadequate, and it often keeps me from inviting guests over. I realize that in order to have the perfect party, it will take me far longer than 30 minutes. And with work, house, and kids' activities, I barely have 15 minutes to prepare dinner for my own family, much less a group of guests.

But then I take a step back and think of the parties I have been to. Most of the events we are invited to are put on by working moms, just like me. They have dishes in the sink and stains in the carpet. They serve hot dogs and chips for the kids on paper plates. Sometimes there are a couple of unique dishes for the adults to "ooh" and "ahh" over. Sometimes the party has a theme, but there is rarely a "table-scape" that looks like it should be on the cover of a magazine.

I am truly blessed to have great family and friends. These great folks don't expect me to be perfect and would wonder if I had lost my marbles if I tried to put on the perfect party event. No they just want to relax and enjoy the companionship. What a wonderful gift! I need nothing more.

Throw a party outdoors, have some fun with the Par-B-Que which has a golf theme. No special theme is required for a party for Mother's Day. Just have fun.
