Pregnancy and Female Hair Loss

By: C. Gray Changes to hair and body are normal during a woman's pregnancy. Some will experience more healthy and beautiful hair, while other women will actually experience changes that are less than appealing. One change is hair loss, starting with noticing additional hair on their pillow, and brush. To keep this from moving to an abnormal states is to eat right and check with your doctor about taking vitamins that will help with hair maintenance.

Hair can also go from straight to curly, full to limp or hair wont take a perm. This is because pregnancy hormones affect every part of your hair. Working with your hair instead of against it can help hair stay healthy and strong. Trying to make an extreme change can cause unneeded damage and can even cause hair loss. Try scalp treatments and scalp massages every few weeks to help keep the scalp and hair healthy. This can also be a great destresser for expecting women.

In fact, it is the hormonal imbalance that is the biggest cause of hair loss in pregnant women. And most women won't begin losing their hair until after the delivery of the child. The rise in hormones causes the hair to get thicker and stronger. It also sends the hair into a resting period and after delivery, hair begins to fall out when the hair is returning to the normal cycle.

Pregnancy is a time when normal female hair loss is slowed , but the time after pregnancy is when time must be made up. Therefore, post pregnancy a woman's hair loss increases. A good way to keep your hair healthy during and post pregnancy is to talk with your doctor to ensure a proper balance of hormones. Also avoid pigtails, ponytails, cornrows, hair weaves, braids and tight rollers. These can cause unneeded stress on the hair follicles and can lead to hair loss. Eating a proper diet of fruits and vegetables will help protect the hair follicle and will encourage hair growth. The proper shampoos and conditioners can also help.
