Rope: an integral Part of Modern Living

By: Barney Garcia Rope is an important part of our everyday life. How can you possibly fasten or connect things without a rope? Then think of the industries, transport and mining sectors, where for every lifting, dragging, launching or holding you need to take the help of several kinds of ropes.

We have a common tendency of calling any fastening device the rope. But by common standard to be called as rope it has to be over 1/8" in diameter. Anything thinner than that is termed as cord or twine like the stuffs you use as clothesline or the strings used in gardening.

If you want to buy rope you will find that ropes are sold by the foot length from reels. However if you want to buy ropes for specific purposes, you can also get them in pre-measured packages. Just think of the purpose why you need them and then buy the specific kind of rope serving your purpose rightly.

So what are the qualities that you should take into consideration while you head the store for buying one for you? Ask the storekeeper, if the particular rope is resistant to such environmental elements as moisture, mildew or sunlight. Also enquire about how much abrasion the rope can withstand. Also enquire about the shock load capacity of the rope. Shock load refers to the rope’s ability to stretch without breaking.

Ropes are made by twisted or braiding the fibers together and they are secured by knots. As you reach the market you will come across several types of rope that are made of different kinds of materials.

Nylon ropes are by far the most popular product with highest demand. It has several advantages that you can not find in other types of ropes. Nylon ropes are strong. Also they are heat, water and abrasion resistant. Nylon ropes can be stretched to a considerable extent without any breakage and it is a huge absorbent of shock.

If you want to get an inexpensive version of rope, you can opt for Polypropylene (poly) rope. It comes with floating feature, but they are slightly hard to tie.

If you want a durable product, then you can trust a Polyester rope which has similar features as polypropylene ropes, but more flexible and durable.

You can find a time tested device in form of a Manila which is made from hemp. This variety of rope is strong and weather resistant. Only problem with this rope is it has very little stretch.

Need the rope for just temporary purposes? Then go for Sisal rope that is made of natural fiber and lacks in strength.

Guide your choice of rope according to its intended use.
