SCHOOLS: Let's Make Connections with Local Businesses

By: Jake Solochek How can schools build relationships with the community? One way is to inform local businesses that it is in their interest to connect with future employees and customers (our students). They will be paying OUR social security!

Here's a starting draft of a letter that I send to people in my community.
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Dear (name of manager in a Local Business),

I am a teacher at a local middle school. I’m writing to you because I believe you will be interested to learn more about our school and how your business will benefit by supporting us in a very easy way: with your story.

I am interested in bringing interesting people into our middle school to inspire kids to see the connection between their studies and their future work. How is math used in your work? How did school work help you prepare for your exciting and interesting work as a graphic arts firm with web marketing? How did you continue to study after you left university?

These are the types of questions that engage my students. You can see more at my site about mentors on video www.geocities.com/talkinternational1/mentorsonvideo

I hope you will become a mentor on video! (If you can’t find time to visit our school, please contact me so I can guide you in making the short video for our Mentors program. I’ll even drive over and make the video for you…)

OLD COMPUTERS?
We are also in the process of updating our computer center. If you have an older model computer, we will be happy to pick it up and give you a letter of appreciation to show that you donated a computer to a non-profit organization.

Downtown Academy of Technology and Arts www.downtownacademy.org is dedicated to preparing local kids to compete globally and to help them find their place in the globalized marketplace. Your assistance will help us help them. Please find out more by calling the Principal David Jett at 954 767 0403.

Thanks for your time.
