By: Tymon Hytem The River Walk is a definite must visit place on your next trip to the great state of Texas. Located along the banks of the San Antonio River in Paseo Del Rio, San Antonio’s River Walk is a tourist’s heaven. Here, you will find hundreds of restaurants, hotels and shops lined up along the beautiful San Antonio River. It is a must stop place on your vacation.
The history of the River Walk area dates back to the late 1600s when group of missionaries and Spanish explorers came upon the waters of the Yanaguana. They were celebrating Saint Antony’s day and renamed the river San Antonio in his honor. The city of San Antonio was established many years later in the early 1700s when the Alamo, or the Mission San Antonio De Valero, was established. Today, the river walk is a beautiful historic district that has something to delight every visitor.
When visiting the River Walk, you will want to make sure to check it out from the river itself by taking a boat cruise. Through this three mile tour traveling 35 minutes up the river, you will see the entire length of the River Walk area. It is a beautiful way to see the many unique establishments and the old historic area as well as learn some fascinating historical facts about the River Walk. There are three locations along the River Walk that the Rio San Antonio Cruises leave from. It is well worth the time and enjoyment, not to mention a great way to scope out all the shops and establishments that it has to offer.
After you have seen the view from the river, it is time to start walking it. The area of shops and restaurants is extremely pedestrian friendly as there are no cars allowed down by the river. The River Walk winds around and loops under bridges as two sidewalks run parallel along both sides of the San Antonio river. These sidewalks are lined with hundreds of shops, hotels and many great restaurants. It is also a quick hop over to some of San Antonio’s other major tourist attractions including the Alamo, the Tower Life Building and the Arneson River Theater.
No matter your reason for visiting the San Antonio area, whether it be business or pleasure, the River Walk is a great stop on your trip. You will find the river lined with many historical places including the Crockett Hotel, the Menger Hotel and La Mansion del Rio known for their famous ghosts. You will also be able to find just about any cuisine that you could imagine in the hundreds of restaurants that line up along the river. If you are planning on visiting the area, make sure to do your research and visit during a time of one of the many festive events such as the river parades, conventions, and the fiesta San Antonio.
