Simple Ways to Have More Fun at Home

By: Catherine Ann I love to write. I have found that writing forces me to examine myself, to figure out what is most important to me. Maybe it's the act of putting my feelings down on paper. Somehow it seems more permanent. I guess I feel that if I am going to go to all of the trouble to write something down, it should be something worthwhile.

When you hit your mid 40's you begin to think about different things that you did when you were in your twenties and thirties (Not to mention your teens!). I recently begin to wonder how I would be remembered. How would my kids think about me and talk about me after I was gone? Would the things I believe in and stood for be passed on to them?

When these thought occurred to me, I grabbed a pen and began to write a list of the things I wanted to make sure my kids knew about life before I passed on. Over the next few days, I will do my best to share with you my thoughts on this subject.

Why is it that everything has gotten more serious? How often do you really see someone doubled over just cracking up? Where has all of the fun gone?

With all of the pressures in life, it is sometimes easy to forget all of the joy and happiness that is around us.

A few nights ago I saw my kids goofing around in the living room. There was a big stack of dishes to wash, but they could wait. This was any opportunity to have some great fun.

I threw the dish towel aside and run into the living room with my hands waving frantically over my head and screaming my own rendition of a war cry. Suddenly my kids were screaming in delight as I pounced on the group and the tickle wars began. Within minutes my wife and oldest son were bounding down the stairs and jumping into the fray. For the next twenty minutes or so it was pure chaos in my house, and I could not have been any happier.

Later that night I had the chance to reflect on what had happened and I realized that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability have spontaneous fun. As parent we are terrific at teaching our kids how to live responsibly, how to get all of their work done but we need to spend just as much time teaching them how not to get their work done, how to just have fun. After all, isn't that what being a kid is all about?
