Starting Your Autobiography

By: Robert Brady.. The truth is that there are a lot of websites on how to start an autobiography. Many of them are great. Some are not so great. One really cool thing about trying to figure out how you want to present your autobiography is that there are many different ways to do it - many ways that I hadn't even thought of.

Here's a list of some of the more exciting ones:

1. Tape record your autobiography

2. Organize your photo albums

3. Write daily in a journal.

4. Answer questions online and have your answers compiled into a nicely bound, hardcover book that can be passed on from generation to generation.

5. Ask family and friends to tell you one story they remember about you.

6. Download a family tree and fill in the branches.

Tell Your Story in Your Way

The biggest thing to remember when starting your autobiography is that it's your story. So the way you convey your story should reflect who you are. Be honest. Be honest in describing the experience. Be honest in describing how you felt about what happened.

How? Writing Lists.

Yeah. Lists: lists of stories, lists of family, lists of friends, lists of clubs, lists of cars, etc. Nothing could be easier than making lists. Don't underestimate the power of lists. You'll be amazed at how quickly the ideas start to flow. Have a pen and paper ready.

You might be surprised at the direction lists take your autobiography.

Sample Autobiographies And as far as an example of an autobiography...there are tons of these too. If you visit Wikipedia (a great online resource, by the way) you will find an over abundance of sample autobiographies for you to look at.

Take It Slowly

Now that you've started, you'll be tempted to try and sprint to the end. Don't give in to the temptation. Savor your memories. Allow your story to take shape over time. Your time with your story will be more gratifying because:

You'll remember more stories.

You'll give others time to contribute.

You'll learn a lot about yourself and the life you've lived.

You'll tell your story more honestly.

Starting an autobiography can be one of the most gratifying experiences. Writing an autobiography gives you a chance to reflect on your life. It gives you an opportunity to change the course of your life, if necessary.
