Stay Connected With Friends and Family

By: Tom Haye Social networking is a subject that has been gaining much interest and publicity lately. It seems that social networking is not simply a phenomenon. It is the ability to easily find and communicate online with other internet users that share the same views and beliefs as you, that are causing social networking sites to become so popular.

Social Networking may not be a concept that you are familiar with. Social networking is the process of connecting people together based on their social bonds or ties. A very well known social networking site is the hugely popular MySpace. Although the field of social networking is a broad one, it basically consists of two areas: socializing with friends and professional networking. The whole point of social networking is to create a network of friends. The premise of social networking is that any friend of my friend is also my friend. Social networking is not a fad that will disappear. If anything, it will become more ingrained in mainstream sites.

There are many different ways to use social networking sites. Social features provided by most community sites are blogging, email, groups, classifieds and forums. Users can view profiles of friends, post comments, share photos and videos. It is the easiest way to share photos, journals and interests with a growing network of mutual friends. And you thought social networking was all about text-messaging among bored teenagers. The goal of virtual networking is to “get noticed,” to meet people and to develop relationships on your own time and in your own space.

So if you have not tried social networking, you might want to try it and see what the fuss is about. The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Most networking communities are free but they do require that you go through a registration process. Once you are registered, you should be able to start contacting other community members. This is because, internet users are looking to chat with someone who has the same views. Just remember that although online communities are a great place to meet other internet users, they can also be dangerous. One way to protect yourself, is to only use your first name in your profile. In your profile if you are required to list the city and the state that you live in, you may want to think about using a nearby city or town, especially if you live in a small town. This will make it more difficult for anyone to contact you off of the internet unless you want them to.
