Ten Steps to Earning an Online Degree

By: Daniel Kane Not all online colleges and universities are alike. The more colleges you check out, the better the chance you will find the one best for you.

Don't just consider the colleges with names you recognize. Keep an open mind until you have explored your options. Remember, some of the most well known colleges and universities are best known for their football teams. Do not overlook some of the fine degree programs at lesser known institutions.

Prepare a list of questions to ask admissions representatives, so you will be able to compare the colleges you are considering.

If an admissions representative calls you, ask the questions you have prepared, and listen carefully to what he or she has to say. Get all the facts.

Don't make the mistake of eliminating a college from consideration too quickly because of cost. Be aware that scholarships, grants, loans, tuition installment programs, and the number of credits granted for prior study or life experience should all be factored in when determining affordability.

Take good notes when speaking with admissions representatives and reading college publications. Otherwise, things are likely to run together and you'll be confused about which colleges offers which features.

Be sure...damn sure...you are willing to put in the time and work necessary to complete an online degree program. You don't need the mind of Albert Einstein, but motivation and self-discipline are essential to your success.

Be sure to choose your major carefully and in accordance with your professional goals. Some fields of study may be so narrow that they are worth little as a credential if you ever want to make a career change. On the other hand, a very broadly based degree might not be specific enough to prepare you for a niche career. Ideally, you should seek a degree that can serve you well even if your professional focus changes.

Try to schedule some regular study time, and stick with your schedule.

If you have been out of school for a few years, don't be intimidated. Just be sure to keep up with your assignments and ask questions whenever you do not understand the material.
