The Birth of The Vehicle Wrap Industry

By: Stew Mayers The trend is believed to have started with long-haul trucks in the mid-90s. Since these trucks run long distances, advertisers saw an opportunity to tap a wider audience by putting colorful vinyl ads on their surfaces. And, because it proved effective in creating recall, delivery trucks and vans followed suit. Before long, vinyl graphics were on all kinds of autos, like cars, bikes, buses, and even planes and hot air balloons.

In the past, advertisers depended on traditional mediums of media, like TV, radio, and print to get their products and services known to their target market. However, since more people began to spend time out of the home and rushing to and from one place to another, outdoor adverts were created. In came billboards, tarpaulins, and giant digital screens. However, it did not just halt there. As lifestyles became more hurried than ever, the only way for marketers to stay abreast with their clients is to catch up with their speeds – thus, the genesis of mobile ads and the vehicle wrap industry. Then, the racing world caught on. What began with basic vinyl decals and stickers has now evolved into a full-body finish of the racers' sponsors. Even road racers adopted the trend and took to vinyl graphics to give their respective vehicles edgy looks.

Vehicle wrap has functional and artistic applications. The whole idea behind it is to create attention-grabbing graphics that impact a wider audience because the vehicle is always in motion.

In case you are stuck in traffic and beginning to get annoyed, a bus wrapped in humorous ads may be a welcome sight. If you're starting to feel bored while waiting in between train stops, vinyl decals on the train's body will serve as effective amusement. And because these adverts kept up with you during your long commute or drive home or to the workplace, you are more likely to remember them instead of the full-page mulicolored ad you saw while looking through the newspaper.

You might ask how that came about? Well, the answer is plain ingenuity. Human behavior is inconsistent and attention spans are small. So greatest recall occurs when ads move and keep pace with present lifestyles. Vehicle wraps provide an effective medium for such ads and this helps the industry to develop daily.
