The Guy Loves His Sports

By: Jamie Roberts Like the majority of men in this country, my guy loves his sports. Not just one sport like baseball or football but all sports. I admire his passion for sports. There are times when I wish he'd love the arts just a little, however.

Just watching sports on TV is not enough for my husband. He's no longer a spring chicken, but he still plays on a men's softball team. Playing on this team is the highlight of his summer. I've asked repeatedly why playing softball is so important, especially when the games are played in the heat of the summer. While he doesn't use these words, I've decided it's because it enables him to re-live his glory days. In fact it's the closest thing to re-living his childhood that he has. It's like playing on the little league team again, but without the grouchy coach and meddling parents.

Besides that, as long as he doesn't treat his body as if it's still 13 years old, playing sports is good for his health. Like most men these days, he spends a lot of time behind a desk in a stressful job. So, getting outside, running the bases, and getting a little exercise is probably the best thing he does for his health. I will admit that he has pushed his limits, suffered injuries, and come home terribly sore. But he loves the game so much, that he's willing to do what it takes to recover so he can live to play another day.

My husband and I have two delightful little girls. But when it comes to encouraging participation in sports my guy seems to be totally blind to their sex. He's always getting one or the other to step outside and play catch or play a little soccer. And because of this great encouragement, both have joined school sports teams. And I'm glad they have as I feel they can learn much from team sport participation. They can improve their coordination, their stamina, and play better with others which is a skill best learned young.

For our family, the sports events can often become a real family affair. The girls gather and we even pop some popcorn and watch the game. We often split over which team we root for but we all are just good friends when we are done. Sports events are typically much better family viewing than many other shows I see now on prime time TV.

Would I fall in love with my sports fanatic all over again? You bet. He's generous and a role model for our daughters and with all that exercise, still easy on the eyes. Oh, and one more benefit is I never struggle trying to decide what to give him as a gift. There are so many sports themed gifts that end up just being the perfect gift. So much better than a pen for Father's day and Christmas!
