The Heart of the Atkins Diet System

By: James Beckett The Atkins diet is a controversial diet method that Dr. Robert Atkins originally wrote about in 1972. It is a high protein, low carb diet that became incredibly popular in the 1990s and is still practiced today. Here are some guidelines that will help you learn the secret behind the Atkins Diet.

For starters the elimination or drastic reduction in the consumptions of carbohydrates is the cornerstone of this diet plan. The theory of Atkins is that since our bodies burn up the sugars that carbohydrates first for energy, our metabolism never gets around to burning fat away because the energy needs come from the carbs. Hence we don't lose weight with the carbs in our system.

The Atkins diet emphasizes the importance of eating foods high in protein like red meats, pure cheeses, fish, poultry, and eggs. It also says that it's okay to eat meals high in fats and oils like butter, mayonnaise, and salad dressings since the body will burn it quickly.

The medical term Atkins teaches for what happens when the body is denied carbohydrates and it turns to burning other fuels is called "ketosis". And this natural function means that out bodies naturally burn fat when it needs fuel and carbs are not in our systems to provide that fuel. And as fats are burnt off, we lose weight the natural way.

But the heart of why Atkins works is also in the attitude we are taught because to stay on the diet, we have to do what most diets don't ask us to do which is demand our diet requirements even when eating out. An Atkins dieter is forceful in a restaurant to tell the waiter exactly what can and cannot be served with his or her meal. This means that even in a hamburger joint, you speak up to insist you get your hamburger without the bun but with extra lettuce, pickles and tomato. And your strict observance of the carb free lifestyle also means no french fries, onion rings, potatoes or anything else that will introduce sugar to your system.

Many dieters will feel ashamed by these odd requests-those are the people who will not grasp the secret of the Atkins Diet. You have to be brave and forceful about your food plan to be successful at this diet. Just as with anything, you need to put in the effort if you want to succeed.

If you are going to embark on this dieting plan, you have to learn every element of the Atkins Diet first. Buy a good book on it so that you can learn the little tricks and tips that allow you to enjoy good food while still sticking to the diet. You can also get free recipes online so you will never be stuck for meal ideas.

The statistics don't lie that Atkins is a workable program that has been a huge success for a lot of different kinds of people. You should expect a transition period as you move out of a lifestyle of eating carbs and become used to the Atkins system. But that minor discomfort is certainly worth the big results you can effect if you can get on the Atkins diet and stick with it.
