The Low Down on LASIK. Laser Eye Vision Correction is a Permanent Fix?

By: Dr. Kim Robbins LASIK or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis offers a number of benefits over other forms of laser vision correction because it is performed under a protective layer of corneal tissue.

This procedure deals with less eye surface area which makes healing faster, as well as providing less chance for tissue scarring. It also allows for quicker healing times. The chance of corneal haze is greatly lessened as well. Patients will experience a quicker return of vision. Often within 24 hours of surgery.

Every patient is different but most will be able to pass a drivers examination without their glass or contact lenses within days of the procedure.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?

If you have had fairly stable vision for the past year, LASIK may be right for you. It is recommended to not have a large change in vision over the past 12 months. Consult your physician if you have any doubts.

Frequently patients looking into LASIK are near-sighted, far-sighted or have astigmatism. Although you need to be healthy and prove to have healthy vision in general, age should not be considered. LASIK is successfully performed on people from their teens to retirement age.

If you are ready for a change in your life, to correct your vision, you are ready for LASIK.

Laser eye surgery, or LASIK, is not recommended while taking some medications. Consult your physician or surgeon. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.

At Robbins Eye Center your consultation will determine your candidacy. Dr. Robbins will discuss with you whether your prognosis is optimal for the LASIK procedure. Hopefully you will be a great candidate and be able to opt for the best choice of your life - IMPROVED NATURAL VISION!

BENEFITS OF LASIK

The greatest benefit of LASIK is permanent visual correction. For most people this means a life free of glasses and contacts!

LASIK is painless. LASIK conveniently corrects the vision in both of your eyes at the same time. You will be out of the Vision Center in less than two hours. You may return to work the very next day. You'll save money on glasses and contacts and all that goes with them.

Generally patients return to driving and work the very next day. Your vision will improve gradually over the first 24 hours till the full effect of the surgery is realized.

ABOUT THE LASIK PROCEDURE

Your eyes will be numbed using anesthesia contained in eye drops. Your eye will be held open with a small holder in order to prevent you from blinking and creating a problem during the procedure.

Next, an instrument known as a microkeratome makes a protective flap in the cornea. During this process you may feel a little pressure, but no discomfort. You will be asked to look directly at a target light while the laser reshapes the cornea, usually in less than a minute. Then, the protective flap is folded back in place where it bonds securely without the need for stitches. After LASIK, some patients report a slight discomfort that usually goes away within twelve to twenty-four hours.
