The Many Uses Of Rubber Stamps

By: Susan Chiang Rubber Stamp is a tool used to create interesting impressions onto cards, fabric, scrapbooks, and other artistic mediums. Rubber Stamp is an instrument made of wood or acrylic block. The working surface is made of a sheet of rubber and an image or pattern is deeply carved, etched, molded or laser-engraved onto this working surface. The medium can be various types of fabric, paper, glass, plastic, rock, or metal, etc. Inkpad is an essential accessory for rubber-stamping. Good quality rubber stamps have deeply etched design and the die or the ink is trimmed neatly from the edges to get rid of unwanted ink smear on the medium.

The United States Post Office was the first major place where the rubber stamps were used. By 1938, these post offices had nearly 170,000 rubber stamps to hand-cancel the mails.

In recent years, rubber stamps have become popular and are used for variety of purposes. They are used for business, craft projects, personalized letters and scrapbooks . Visual effects created by the rubber stamping craft has made it one of the more creative hobbies nowadays.

There are two categories of rubber stamps available in the market nowadays; stamps for official use and stamps for decorative purposes. Some of the commonly used rubber stamps are custom rubber stamps, personalized rubber stamps, self-inking rubber stamps, hand rubber stamps and art and craft rubber stamps.

Official rubber stamps can contain signature for official documents, or they can be custom-made to show the company address or corporate logo. These custom rubber stamps are generally used to date incoming mail, memos, etc.

Art and craft rubber stamps are decorative in nature and are available in many intricate designs. Art and craft rubber stamps can further be combined with other techniques to create eye-catching traditional art. These rubber stamps are used to decorate useful things such as letter paper and greeting cards. Other then card making, rubber stamps have also become widely popular for scrap booking.

The art and craft rubber stamps are expensive so they should be well looked after and properly cleaned after every use. Extra-fine embossing powder is required to emboss an art stamp, in order to pick up all the details properly.
