The Sport of Gymnastics

By: Allana Korbasti Gymnastics is one of the most popular sports in the world. People love to watch gymnastics competitions on television and many children join clubs in hopes of becoming the next Olympic star. Gymnastics is fascinating to watch because of the graceful and acrobatic movements that the gymnasts are able to perform. Most people could never dream of doing flips on a balance beam but there are those that can and they appear to do it with ease.

The genesis of gymnastics is traced to a Greek type of ancient exercise. Most gymnastics competitions have events for both men and women gymnasts. Some of the popular events for men are parallel bars, rings, side horse, vaulting horse, horizontal bar, and floor exercise. Some women events are balance beam, vaulting horse, uneven bars, and floor exercise.

The main focus for men's events is upper body strength. The rings are probably the hardest since the gymnast has to hold himself up on suspended rings, and work certain movements at the same time. In women's events strength is of course a big part of the work, but being graceful and flexible are the main components. When we look at athletes performing on the balance beam we are generally in awe. Most of us couldn't do what they do even on the floor.

The Olympic gymnastic events are the most popular in the world. People from a myriad of nations support the gymnasts from their countries. The United States athletes usually win bronze, silver, and frequently the gold medals. Winning the gold makes them the best gymnasts in the world. The winners, specifically women, are the sweetheart of the whole country for a few years.

This is a sport that needs to be taken up when you are very young. Parents need to take their children to clubs and classes early when their bodies are agile and flexible. These children can be molded and trained into good gymnasts. Most cities all over America have several gymnastics clubs that you can choose from. Some clubs offer classes that are just oriented towards fun, while some are more serious gearing children towards a professional life.

Rhythmic gymnastics is a new entrant into this spectacular sport. This utilizes five objects which are rope, ball, clubs, ribbon, and hoop. A gymnast can choose any of the five objects to carry out the routine. Ina team event, all five implements can be used by five different gymnasts. Rhythmic gymnastics are currently restricted to women, possibly owing to their natural grace, and it is fascinating and captivating to watch them make these objects dance to their tune.

Trampolining has also become a very popular gymnastic competition, and was even added to the Summer Olympics roster. Trampolining involves competitors accomplishing specific moves, which are then judged.

Most professional gymnast start training when they are very young, and the typical gymnast reaches their peak performance in their late teens or early twenties. In order to become a professional gymnast, many children train seven days a week and their entire life is centered around the sport of gymnastics. If they do not do well in gymnastics when they are older, this can be very hard on their egos since they have been training their entire lives for this.

Gymnastics is a beautiful and fascinating sport to watch, if you get an opportunity to see a competition live don't miss it. Watching the seemingly impossible movements for yourself is a great experience.
