The Unsung Value Of Opt-In Email Lists

By: Jeff Alderson If you're a webmaster who isn't taking advantage of all that opt-in email lists have to offer, it's very likely you're keeping the door closed on some major revenue potential. Opt-in mail lists deliver some big advantages that many fail to notice.

Opt-in lists are rather powerful devices because they give webmasters the ability to communicate directly with visitors whenever they want. A website is passive; email is not. Instead of being at the mercy of incoming traffic to get the word out about products and services, those who create opt-in lists can contact potential buyers at any time. Since opt-in links involve a consensual sign-up process, visitors expect this form of contact. The ideas for marketing with these lists are almost endless. If these lists are available, but unutilized - use them! If they haven't been cultivated in the past, get them going. The payoff can be big.

Those who do choose to create subscriber lists should be rather upfront about their intentions. Subscribers should be plainly apprised of the fact that if they sign up, promotional material, newsletters or so on will arrive in their email from time to time. It's not a bad idea to make this very plain on the registration form. This is a good business practice that can reduce the potential for spam complaints and help ensure that lists truly involve those who want to receive the mailings.

The options for using opt-in mailing lists for marketing a quite extensive. From plain emails about ongoing promotions to newsletters and coupons, the ideas go on and on. Despite the option chosen, it is smart to make sure that any contact made via the subscriber list is useful, relevant and even interesting or informative. Should attention be paid to these details, the promotion can be a big success.

These subscriber lists do involve a bit of work to really cultivate, but the effort can pay off with some big benefits. One of the best is that these lists can increase conversion rate. When mailings are targeted, focused and useful, they can help websites create relationships with their visitors and even form a level of trust. This can result in future sales.

In addition to relationship building, this type of tool can help increase profits and even repeat business. Even if a campaign doesn't enjoy a high level of sales that result, the potential for future contact is still there. Plus, since the mailings don't necessarily require a big investment of time or money, any conversion can result in profits. The real perk of these mailings is that they remind former visitors of a site's presence and its services or products. This on its own can result in sales at a later time.

Subscriber lists also come with the benefit of enabling webmasters to turn their readers into referrers. This might be the most overlooked offshoot benefit of these strings. There is always potential for readers to pass on emails to friends, family and colleagues who might be interested. What's more, there's nothing saying these campaign emails can't ask readers to do just that. It is not at all uncommon for newsletter and even direct mail advertising campaigns to include post scripts asking readers to forward them along. Plus, if the campaign involves a newsletter that has high quality, relevant content, it's likely some readers will forward the mail along anyway. This, in turn, can result in more traffic on your site and potential sales profits in your pocket.

Taking the steps to increase a site's traffic without having a way to capitalize on it is not the best way to go. Some of the biggest companies with an online presence understand this and work hard to cultivate opt-in mailing lists. From newsletters and coupons to promotional materials about sales or new products, these companies use their lists to reach out and remind former visitors or customers of their products and services. The effort can and does result in more traffic, more visitors and even repeat sales. These lists don't require a huge amount of work considering the benefits they can deliver.
