The story of Murcia County

By: RussellMarsh The tradition of Murcia has been a long story of cultivation, business and INVASION. very early days (500+ B.C.) Murcia's initial inhabitants - Iberian tribes - had already trading ties with Greeks and Phoenicians. Then Hannibal Barca and his masses from Carthage conquered the region founding Carthago Nova, which nowadays is the smart sea port of Cartagena.

Then, inescapably came the Romans and in the 5th Century the Visigoths (German) who conquered all of Spain under Euric then to be taken over by the Moors in 711.

The historical city of Murcia (then called Mursiya) was founded in 825 A.D by The Caliph of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman II. Founded on the site of an old Roman Colony there are still lots of Moorish influences there not least in the impressive City walls.

In the 11th century there was civil war & the Caliphate was comquered by local Spaniards to found an independent kingdom, including (at its height) part of the modern provinces of Alicante & Almeria. Peaceful times followed until 1243 when Alfonso X of Castilla & Leon re-conquered Murcia and the surrounding Counties. Severe oppression forced the majority of the Moslem community to become Christian. All 20 mosques were then 'rehabilitated' into Christaian churches.

Under rule from Central Spain the fortunes of Murcia took a quieter turn and the county of Murcia prospered and grew into one of Spain's architectural beauties by early 18th century.

At the peak of Murcia's good times and development Napoleon Bonaparte spoilt the party by wrecking and looting the County in 1810. This was closely followed by an pandemic of plague followed by Cholera.. After this Murcia's situation worsened until the 20th Century when Murcia only had to be a minor city. There was serious violence during the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and lots of beautiful monuments and churches were destroyed. Mucia's decline also occurred as the lucrative silk market lost it's market share against the onslaught of man made fibres such as nylon.

More recently Murcia has been kept going by citrus fruit farming and associated businesses.

The most recent development in the story of Murcia has been the building of 37 luxury golf courses at the time of writing with lots more on the way. Polaris World, a multi-billion pound Company has spent heavily in Murcia and is ensuring all it's developments water 'independent' by creating clean fresh water from sea water.

The economic welfare of Murcia County is assured.
