Trouble Free Dog Bathing

By: Donna Boras Dog bathing can be a pleasant event for some owners and their pets or not. Some dogs think dog baths are fun and others think it is a form of torture. If you have a dog that is afraid of the water, don't put the plug in; let the water flow through the drain and use a sprayer. Not being surrounded by water may alleviate some of the fear.
To avoid injury from slipping, place a rubber mat or towel on the bottom of the tub, sink or shower when washing a dog.
Preparing for Dog Bathing
1. Dogs should be brushed daily to keep the coat clean and shiny but it is important also to brush before bathing to remove mats. It will also improve the shampoos effectiveness.
2. It is good to have something to keep all your dog's bath products and supplies in. Things like shampoos, conditioners, towels, hair dryer and grooming mists.
3. To protect your dog's eyes from the shampoo, apply an ointment around the eye area.
4. To prevent water from entering the ear canal put cotton balls into your buddy's ears.
6. Consider a raised dog bath; it does make it much easier for you and your canine pal.
6. Restraints - for a quick and hassle free bath time. This will also lessen the chance of injury to you as well as your pet and attempts to escape. Some pet tubs come with restraints included.
9. Have something for rinsing and wetting your dog, such as a plastic pitcher. Some tubs come supplied with a sprayer. If you do not have one, sprayers can be purchased separately. There are many convenience products on the market, pet spas, dog showers, and sprayers with integrated shampoo cartridges.
Dog Bathing Tips - Washing Your Dog
1. To wash your dog's face, saturate a towel with water and shampoo and wipe his face, being careful not to get shampoo in his eyes.
2. After you wet your dog thoroughly all over, massage shampoo into coat all the way to the skin from head to tail. For rinsing, a spray does the best job because if any residue remains it could cause skin problems. In any case, rinse well.
3. Keep the restraint attached as you towel dry your dog, then finish with a pet dryer at a cool setting. Brush your pet again.
4. If you use a moisturizer mist it will make your dog's coat shine and prevent matting.
5. Other grooming tasks should be done at this time, such as clean your buddies teeth and ears and trim his nails. You have many options as to how you wish to groom your dog. Many owners prefer a back saving grooming table which is at a level that makes it so much more efficient and easy to work on your dog.
6. At this time treats and love are perfect rewards to give your faithful friend for excellent behavior.
You are finished with your dog bathing! I hope it was a happy experience.
