Understand Diamond Clarity Before You Buy Diamonds

By: Grace Jennings One of the most important aspects of buying diamonds is diamond clarity. In fact, it's directly related to the price you'll pay for diamond rings, necklaces, earrings or other pieces of jewelry. As one of the measurements of quality, you'll want to be prepared before you go shopping.

An Explanation of Grades

Diamond clarity is expressed in grades and having some knowledge about the various levels makes it more likely you'll get a great deal. At the top of the list is the flawless diamond. This includes perfect diamonds that are extremely expensive. If you're just shopping for some nice diamond earrings or even an engagement ring, you'll probably find this class out of your price range. These are truly precious and rare gems.

The next grade is the very, very slightly included which is comprised of excellent quality diamonds. The diamonds in this group have very few flaws and the ones they have are invisible to the human eye. In addition, they are rarely seen under 10x magnification or greater.

The very slightly included grade comes next in diamond clarity, and diamonds falling in this grade have only very slight flaws that can be seen under 10x magnification, and only sometimes by the naked eye. Even with such flaws, these diamonds are exquisite and offer significant value.

Next in the clarity grade is slightly included which represents a diminished quality. Flaws can be seen without assistance but the stones are still quite beautiful. For those on a budget, this grade can be a good buy.

Finally, all other diamonds are included into the last grade. This group will represent diamonds you simply want to stay away from. Flaws are significant and make the stones unsuitable for fine jewelry. Take care to be on the lookout for these types of diamonds as some retailers will offer them for sale.

Getting A Deal On Diamond Jewelry

If you're unable to buy the top of the line grade, put some thought into the cut or setting you'll choose. A great cut or even a colored diamond will tend to camouflage any existing flaws so they're not so noticeable.

Coloring helps to hide the visible flaws and also can add a lot of interest to the jewelry. For those who must have white diamonds, clarity is a bigger issue and you should buy the highest diamond clarity you can reasonably afford. You'll be able to enjoy your chosen gem for many years to come.
