Understanding About Poodle Care

By: Lisa A Collins What Everyone Should Know About PoIt can definitely be intimidating trying to decide on a particular breed of dog, there are after all hundreds of different breeds that one can choose from. The Poodle is definitely one fan favorite however, and it is really no wonder why. These dogs make great family pets because they are even tempered, even around young children. Besides this they are also affectionate, loving and make great watchdogs because they are always alert and on guard.

That is why breeding high quality poodles is so popular. Reputable breeders spend years learning about the breed and researching bloodlines to promote healthy Poodle puppies. A good breeder also knows that there are a few things that need to be taken seriously into consideration before one goes ahead and buys a Poodle, in particular proper Poodle care.

Poodle care involves proper brushing, bathing, training, clipping and guidance of the dog, as this is essential in order for them to grow up happy and healthy. Proper nutrition is also a major part of Poodle care and it is important that the dog be fed the proper foods and gets plenty of fresh water as well.

One of the most important things a breeder should know is proper Poodle nutrition. A good breeder will know the nutritional requirements of expectant and nursing bitches (mother dogs), active young dogs and less active older Poodles. Researching to find the best commercial dog foods and the most popular home made dog food recipes is a breeder's responsibility. They should have excellent advice to give to new Poodle owners.

This includes rabies, parvovirus, distemper and hepatitis. In some cases vaccinations can cause the immune system to overact and so any owner should be sure to keep an eye on the dog for the few hours immediately following the vaccinations.

Poodle breeding is not for everyone. It takes a pretty big upfront investment to enable the purchase of well- bred parents, paying stud fees, maintaining clean kennels, getting good veterinary services and many other breeding necessities like food. Some qualities like caring for new puppy litters as part of the family and then turning the puppies over to new owners takes time to get used to. Some people never get used to this and cannot breed Poodles.

If you are thinking of purchasing a Poodle puppy, stock your house with basic supplies before bringing it home. A dog bed, dog food, brushes, bones, collars and leashes, doggie shampoo and nail clippers a just a few of the possible supplies you should have on hand.

Caring for a Poodle means doing a few things in particular, and this also involves training. Poodles are very quick learners and easy to train, especially when compared to other breeds. A few of the supplies that a would-be Poodle owner should get include dog beds, dog bones, dog brushes, dog shampoo, dog dishes, dog ear cleaners, dog food and nail clippers. By having the right supplies and the resource of a reputable breeder to ask questions of, a new owner can be assured of raising a happy, healthy pet.
